Question Separate USB volume/sound control board?

I recently got a new KVM so I can switch between my gaming/main computer, but I noticed that the volume control stuff on the keyboard does not work. I think it has to do with the KVM using emulation. (which is a feature I specifically wanted so it's a trade off I'm willing to take)

Just wondering, do they make a device that acts like a keyboard, but that is smaller and does only the volume function keys? Basically mute/play/pause/volume etc. I would then buy one or two of those to plug straight into the PCs.

I want something physical, easier and faster than having to move the mouse and fiddle around with that little icon each time. Like say I play a video and it's super loud or I want to pause something because the phone is ringing it's faster to just mash the volume/mute/pause button on the keyboard than to have to move the mouse and then have to click the icon and then click the volume etc.

If nothing exists then I might look into how hard it would be to make using arduino or something, would just need to do some reading up on USB/HID protocol so I can follow the standard and ideally the computer will pick it up and it will just work.

Suppose a crude way would be to cannibalize a cheap keyboard and just rewire the keys to separate buttons.

I also have a puck that controls a Bose system - just touch for on and off, and rotate for loudness. Works for me for past5 years. 🙂
