Separate bank accounts?

My wife recently told me I needed to get a separate bank account. Admittedly, she does the finances and pays the bills in the household and she does a damn fine job of it, however, she recently told me to get my own acccount because I spend too much "play money" when I'm out and about. She claims it's difficult to balance the books, which I can see.

So, I did what she said and got my own account through USAA. My new debit card came the other day and now she's a little upset that she's not on it. I reminded her that she told me to get my "own account" so I did. I will get about $900/mo. in play money once my GI Bill increases in the next few months, since I have both that and my Army Reserve pay going there and I think she wants that to pay bills. I look at it as money I've earned by my service in the Army Reserve. Sure I plan on sharing, but it's likely going to be my computer upgrade money

Anyway, does anyone else have a separate account from their spouse/significant other?

PS - no, it is not a detractor in our relationship and no I am not greedy. I will give her what she asks for. ;)

We merged accounts after we got married. Too much of a pain to worry about more than a few accounts.

Yes.

We have one joint account where the bulk of the bills are paid from.

She has her own credit union with 2 of accounts (1 is used solely for Paypal).

I have my own credit unions where my individual accounts are.

We do...Actually her name is on "my" account, but she still keeps her old account from before we got married. She puts all her paychecks in that account, I put my paycheck and everything else in my account. We pay all of the living expenses out of my account, and we avoid disbursing money from her account at all costs so that we can use her account for emergencies, vacations, home improvements, etc.

i agree! my wife and i have been married over 5 years, and been together for over 10, and never ONCE have even thought of combining our bank accounts.

we seperate out bills like roomates (we don't split each bill, we just each pay certian bills, like i pay phone, cell phone, cars, and she pays mortgage, car insurance, etc.).

if she ever gets in a bind, i got to the bank and ATM out some cash for her to deposit and she does the same, and we never worry about keeping score or anything either

at least this way i know for sure how much i have in my account ALWAYS, same for her

One account. Never an issue: family budget is family budget. Can't have one person paying the bills, and another one spending his/her stuff on personal gratification.

My sister told me that they do not have seperate accounts. She keeps telling me when I get married we should not have seperate accounts.

But, its not really seperate in your case. Some people divide it directly. My brother-in-law gets to put some money into his savings account each month and use that money however he wants, but it usually goes toward stuff for both of them. I think its just easier to have a limit to what you can spend without discussing it with the other person, not a territorial type thing.

I should state that our main acocunt, where our primary paychecks go to is my checking account that I've had for nearly 10 years now. She pays all bills out of it each month. We don't split bills or do anything like that. It's all community money, except I will refrain from spending from it so she can keep it in check.

Yeah, that works, except one vagina, for the woman. Man needs some, he has to beg.

My wife teaches nursing part time so we can't split bills. Even so I'm old school and think it's guys burden to provide the basics in full. Nips money arguments in the butt before they even start. Maybe that's why I'm so cheap and have nothing for myself.

exactly, so it works out, since both parties have a bargaining tool.

If you're the one making the money, you should decide what you get to spend.

If you both have jobs, I'd each have your own accounts and then meet 50/50 on bills or something.

Jiont account for everything , ALL the money goes int there then we each transfer out equal amounts of play money into our personal accounts.
I spend it all on golf no problem , she spends it on photography no problem.
Marriage = equals, therefore equal amounts of play money no matter who brings more in.
