I think genetics play a much bigger role than most of those in most western cultures would like to admit.

Heck, I'm a lot more serious at school than I am at work, so it changes for me over the course of an hour.

You know, I can't think of one person at my school that's serious. Really, I can't.
 
From my personal experience it seems to me religious people tends to find few things funny whereas free thinkers will laugh at almost anything.
