I have the HD490, they sound good when plugged into a computer or home stereo put a portable unit does not put enough power out to give some good volume to these. Plus they are not closed so they radiate whatever you are listening to, to everyone around you. I don't use em for that reason cause I listen to my discman on the bus and I don't want to disturb everyone. Don't get me wrong they are really good headphones, but they are not what I want for my purpose...

I would be willing to sell them to you if you wish... just pm me if you are interested.

Get some 500 series. My 580s are the SHIZ. If you dont wanna spend like $120 on your cans, pick up some 545s or something. The 500 series is leaps and bounds above the 4xx series.

i have a pair of 570's and they're just the sh||||||||||t

check out audioreview.com for lots of user reviews. that's what swayed my decision. the 490's aren't so well-reviewed, it seems.

btw, i got mine refurbished from ubid.com for a substantial discount. you might want to look into that.

while we're on this topic:

i'm using the 570's i mentioned above with a soundblaster live, which, as you're probably aware, has no onboard amplification. this obviously presents a problem when i've got the bass all the way up in windows mixer and i turn the volume up (since the sound card can't drive it a lot of the time, and it breaks up). what's my cheapest and least cumbersome method of externally amplifying this thing? i don't wanna spend $200 on an amp, or have a big receiver under my desk or anything, i just want to boost the signal so it will sound better than what the live is putting out by itself. any audiophiles have thoughts on this issue?

oh lord, the 490 sucked compare to a 545.
490 looks cool nevertheless.
many ppl said 495 is much better and I won't doubt that.

I'm not sure what I want to do now... I just now I need a good pair of headphones, so I don't wake the family when I'm up late working (or goofing off)...

you should really take a look at ubid, they run several sennheiser auctions at a time. mine came three or four days after the auction ended, and i paid $80 for a pair that usually runs $130-150 new. they came in sennheiser factory refurb packaging, so it's legit and all.

i probably sound like a ubid rep :) but it's one of the best purchases i've made in a long time.

Sennheiser's are nice but, I perfer AKG's mainly because they are built with superior workmanship. A lot of the Sennheiser's I have used felt cheap in comparison. AKG's also seem to be more value oriented. For example, I recently picked up a pair of 240DF's for $75 at a local store!
