These are definitly better than a $500 pair of Klipsch Promedia or $500 set of Cambridge Soundworks speakers. For those into games, Creative's X-FI can fairly accuratly give a sence of direction and sound travel when you use the special headphone mode.

I have the HD590s and if those give any inclination at how amazing these are, I say buy if you have the money to spend. :)

I cant believe to a sec that a pair of headphones is going to be better then a surround sound system. With a surround sound system you get bass that you can feel throughout your entire body and true surround sound with speakers placed in the corners of the room. Im sure the bass is awesome on these but how can it compete with a real sub? The drivers are probally better on these then on a surround sound system but still.

Why do you say these are better then a nice klipsch surround sound setup?

oh, i'd also recommend people in the market for the hd650 or this type of headphone to take a look at the akg k701's. headroom lowered the rating of the hd650 to 4.5 stars because of these. :)

i actually really hate boomy subs, I'm defineately not a basshead; but I like to be able to feel the sound! I'm sure these are great for listening to music, but when I'm watching a movie or gaming I dont see how these things could be better. For movies, hearing things flying around the room and feeling the explosions is awesome. And during games, hearing something behind me is really immersive and a cool effect. These headphones couldn't do either of these. I think thats worth the loss of some audio fidelity. That is what makes the surround sound system better in my opinion at least.

Maybe I just havent heard really good headphones? Just curious why some say these would be better..and "because they are" isnt a good answer ;)

Most will find it tough to argue that speakers paired against equally priced headphones sound better. The sound quality is more crisp and clear through a pair of good headphones. However, speakers can definitely be more "fun." No, you're not going to feel the bass from most headphones, but you will likely hear details in the music you hadn't on speakers.

Buying and using some 650's without an amp would be like buying a $5000 HDTV and watching VHS through it.

The only frequency you're really going to feel is the bass, and you'll feel them hit through good headphones, you just won't feel it in your whole body. Watching a movie, gaming, and listening to music are completely different things.

Music, speakers won't compete.
Movies, edge speakers.
Games, I've used good 5.1's and can't stand them compared to even my HD 555's. You would be VERY surprised at how accurately you can pinpoint where a sound came from in a game. Watch some of the CPL, or most of the professional FPS'ers. They'll almost exclusively be using headphones.

Debatable, but to each their own. That's the great thing about hearing.

And you can't say that the K701's own sennheiser. Unless you really think they're better than the orpheus.

I own 2 pairs of Sennheisers, HD580's and HD600's. I find the K701's build quality and sound superior to them as well as the 650's which I merely auditioned. I have a headroom max as an amp.

The discontinued Orpheus at $16,000 isn't merely a pair of headphones but a tube amp as well. I don't really think it qualifies in the context of "hot deal" discussions.

True, but each phone will have their strengths in things like genre's, soundstage, etc...

And practically finding an orpheus for sale makes it a hot deal.

Only 5% of the audible spectrum comes from a subwoofer and it's the mid to high range that can make music sound musical or just plain noise.

AKG's are very nice and I really like the suspended headband and tension spring design but the Sennheiser's pack more value per dollar at $300.

I got mine from beach audio I think, around $260. Amazon doesn't sell them, they're offered by 3rd party.

Because GOD gave you two ears not five ears. Yet despite this small hardware deficiency your own biological software can still distinguish where a sound is coming from.

uhhh, the headroom rating for the 650s is still sitting at 5 stars. It's never been lowered from that. Depending on your application and preferences, the 650s might be your thing or the k701s might be your thing. It all boils down to the person and their preferences.

oh, they were 4.5 at one point in the past. guess they raised it back to 5 stars after the head-fi guys made a fuss. lol.
