Sennheiser HD595

Hi all, looking to buy a Sennheiser HD595 for use with gaming and occasionaly some music (metal + a mix of eveything else). Im just wondering whether to get a PC165 instead due to their gaming uses although they are more expensive. Im using an xfi extreme music at the moment. The open design of the HD595 is no issue (in terms of privacy). Any advice? 🙂

Thanks!

Joe

The HD595 is in a differant league sound quality-wise. If it was me and I could buy either then I wouldn't even think twice. Unless you use a mic alot.

Well I'm not sure if this helps or not, but I just got my HD555s and am using them with my Xtrememusic card. I have been completely blown away by the sound, so I can only assume the 595s will be better.

Have you looked here for information: http://www.headphone.com/

I'm sure PurdueRY and YoYo will be along to help soon enough 😀

Thanks for the replies 🙂 Seems like a prety simple decision now. Taking a look at headphone.com atm, although I am interested on what Pur and Yo have to say now 😉

Meh, I'm not really a headphone guy too much.

Unless it's actual stuff I have tried or general suggestions, my default response is to head over to http://www.head-fi.org/ 🙂

Hehe, thanks for the link, there is an appreciation thread for the 595s :Q Quote:

"You might not get many contributions to this thread. Most 595 owners, like me, don't visit Head-Fi much anymore. We don't feel any need to, as we've found our ideal phones and would rather spend the time listening to music."

Well, Ill leave a post on their forums, but im prety much decided 🙂 Thanks all who replied (Keith and Yo for the links).

Don't even think about the PC165, the 595 is a true headphone you are going to love the sound quality, both music and gaming (I have 570's, the older version of the 555 I believe, they were $150US 3 years ago). The 'gaming' headsets are garbage, just get a desk mic for $5 at Radioshack instead.

Yeah, the main appeal seems to be that they are headsets rather than headphones, but I've never actually tried one.

Resident AT headphone guru, chiming in! 😀

Sennheiser is not the best brand to go with if you're playing hard-rocking music and want to hear the music "slam" you (i.e. on-stage, instead of 20 rows back). The best name for rock and metal is generally Grado. Look up Grado SR225s - these are generally regarded to be the Grado model with the most value and costs around $175, less if you buy used. However, Grados are best for music and not terribly awesome for gaming, because they have a tiny soundstage (sound locations will be harder to pinpoint). Also, all of Grado's headphones are open, so that means sound will be leaking in and out (not good in a noisy environment).

For gaming, the overall best headphones you can get are from Audio-Technica (specifically, the A500, A700, or A900). All three are closed headphones and are pretty balanced and detailed, so they're pretty good for all genres of music. They also have an enormous soundstage, so they feel very airy and open (sound-wise). The A900 is a great gaming headphone, and I believe it can be had for around $180 or so. Not too sure about that, though.

http://www.head-fi.org is the best place to go for headphone questions, but do a search first. There's a lot of great info on those forums. But whatever you do, don't get sucked in! Buy your headphones, then run!

Aflac's right on a number of points, but don't abuse your ears in a quest for "slam", and don't compound it with closed designs, etc., unless necessary. It's incredibly easy to "overdrive" your ears with headphones, and the isolation compounds this -- you'd get yelled when you're not using headphones with SPLs at anywhere that level.

I really like the Sennheisers, but right from the onset I was thinking the same thing -- these might not be the best headphones for hard rock. My suggestion is to go to a real audio store where they have a rack of headphones, take your own music, and sample a few of them for fit and sound to judge for yourself. Try to keep the actual sound levels (not the volume contol setting; headphones have different sensitivity) matched during listening -- louder tends to be subjectively judged better. Better sound quieter is better for you.

Other option is to get the Sennheiser PC150 for gaming and another set of headphones dedicated to music.

Thanks for the points everyone, the A900, after some looking around as well, looks like a very nice headset. However I have a tight £90 budget and therefore is impossible to get a A900. However I will take a look inside a store and try some other headsets out first (thanks Madwand). In terms of pricing even the A700 is pushing it (not availabe in UK needs US delivery), but is there much difference between the A700 and A900? Seems like value wise the Sennheiser would be better.

Thanks 🙂

Joe
