Anyone know if there's actually a difference between these 2 headphones? A quick glance at the sennheiser site shows that the HD280's are silver and the HD280PROs are black.

HD280Pro
HD280 Silver

However, if you look on a shopping site like Amazon, the headphones are a picture of the HD 280 PRO's (although the model number is HD280PRO).

Anyway, are there any technical differences also? One of my friends was saying something like one of them required a headphone amp whereas the other doesn't.

Thanks

they are the same... the hd280pro was first introduced... then they made it in silver and called it silver. if you check the technical data, the impedance is the same on both headphones so they both require (or dont) the same amount of amplification

Unless you're dead-set on getting those, they become very unwieldy in social areas, I'd suggest picking up some PXs.

What do you mean by "unwieldy in social areas"?

Personally, I love my 280Pros and the fact that, while I am wearing them, people know they will have to come up to me to get my attention in order to get me to listen to them. It cuts down on the annoying "nice weather today, isnt it?" type of chatter, which allows me to work/study/listen uninterrupted by the trivial crap most people will otherwise interrupt me with. It's like having a spam filter, but for conversation.

I'm really not all that anti-social, but I do not like being interrupted when I am concentrating on something.

I agree, for portable use I'd suggest some canalphones such as those made by Shure and Etymotic. No difference between those them, OP, I have a pair & like em quite a bit.

I have earbuds for those. These are just for the dorm room so I don't wake up my roommate when I'm coding at 3am.

I've got the 280Pro's, and I love them. They are fine for portable use too IMO. I used them on a few recent flights and I loved how they almost completely cut down on cabin noise. Gaming is nice with them too...you sort of are in your own little world.

Oh, and for all the "audiophiles", I know compared to the $33,559,698,696.00 Senns, they suck more than suck itself, but I like em. :p
