Sending RMA hard drive back.

Okay, I recently got my hard drive replaced. I want to make sure all of the data on my hard drive is completely destroyed before I send it back. How should I do it so I'm sure that it's completely gone and can't be recovered?

Depending on the manufacturer, there should be a utilities disk that has some sort of Write 0's to disk feature. Stronger than fdisk and format. Granted if you REALLY wanted to, there are some evidence eliminator programs around that basically format and write 0's til the cows come home....
😉
edit: if you want to be certain the data can NEVER be read again, you have to physically destroy the platters........ Unless they know you are some Most Wanted criminal or something, the hard drive manufacturer would not bother spending the cash and time to get any data.........

yeah, I wrote zero's to the drive twice already (4 hours for each pass). I was looking for a good program to do it, and found one.. but it was only a demo. I don't feel like paying $60 for it either 🙁

Bah, yeah.. I'm definitely not the world's most wanted criminal, but I do have plenty of mp3's I've downloaded off the net which is illegal, I guess.

With all the people out there with child pron on their computers, do you think they are going to worry about mp3s which havn't even been proven in a court of law to be illegal!

the people that are cracking down on that stuff don't want the people taking it. they want the people providing it. I.E napster and warez groups. They don't want to waste their time with the little guy. Even if they did, they wouldn't have much on you. They would only be able to get bits and peices of the data and it would never hold up in court. any they would never spend the time and money like r0tt3n1
said. its not worth it to bust an 18 year old kis wanting to listen to music.

True... a format should be sufficient for your needs.
