Sending information through an unsecured wireless network?

Hi all,

When sending information through an unsecured wireless network, I'm aware that plain text information can be picked up in between a computer and a router. But my question is, can information sent via SSL be read in between a computer and a wireless router/access point?

No. SSL is encrypted from endpoint to endpoint (from the PC to the web server) Non-SSL traffic, however, is plainly visible. Why is your wireless unsecured anyway?

Oh hell no, mines secured!
I was asking because of the risk of using wi-fi at cafes and similar places with open networks.

Yes, SSL web sites wouldn't be transmitted in plain-text so your ok there. The problem would be non SSL websites. You could setup a VPN connection to your home and when in public places, VPN to your home and then you could use any sites you wanted.

So to setup a VPN I could use software like Open-VPN correct? (Open VPN-bad pun)
