Sending donations for the Hurricane Katrina Disaster

be careful who you are sending your donations too. Some agencies will put your money where ever they need it. If you are donating money strictly to go to the Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts, I encourage you to find another organization other than the Red Cross.

The Red Cross, although they want the money now duw to circumstances, won't neccessarily put your money to that effort. If there is something else going on that they need money for, then it might go there.

Not if you write "Katrina" on the check..

that is exactly what the red cross did with the 9/11 money.... they set up a 911 relief fund. and then they used the money for other stuff. there was he!! on over it and in the end... the head of the red cross resigned, i think.

Edit: salvation army all the way ... the give almost all the money to the cause and ery little is used for admin.

Many organizations will do this. Your money will just replace money from general donations.

Charity-Z decides to spend $10 million on aid. The start off expecting to collect $6 million in Katrina-specific donations and use $4 million in general donations.

If they then get $8 million in Katrina-specific they just put in $2 million in general donations instead of $4.

You've still helped though, since they now have an extra $2 million to spend on other aid work.

Also a PSA:

Remember your local charities still need money to help people in your own state.

Whenever a disaster like this hits, many people donate as much as they can to Red Cross and they end up with more money than they can use, while people stop supporting local charities because they are broke.

The radio station I listen to collected over $60,000 in donations yesterday, so I'll be sending a check off to Northwest Harvest (Washington state food bank supplier) instead.

at work, we are collecting money till October 1st, then my boss is matching the donations and sending it directly down to the affected area.
