Sending a PC via UPS with a heavy heatsink.

I just sent out a nice PC to my brother which had a 2100+ T-Bred B cooled by a SLK800 heatsink. Well I had it packaged in the original packaging that the case was shipped in which is large foam that conforms to the shape of the case holding it firmly in place. It gets to him and the damn SLK800 broke all 3 clips on top holding it down and was causing trouble all inside that beast. The CCFL was cracked in half and who knows which of the cards still works. It was insured for $1000 and the claim process has begun. My question is are you not supposed to ship a PC out with large heatsinks like that in place. Has anyone else heard of this problem? At least they can't say that the piece must have been loose on the inside, because clearly you can see it rip the pegs right off the socket. Next time I guess I will just have to fill the inside with some airbags or something. I just wanted to know how many other peeps may have experienced this.

well i don't think the problem was the large heatsink. i have an slk800 as well, and i can tell you right now that the problem was the clip mechanism itself. those things are so fvcking tight, i thought it was a miracle it didn't crack the supports on the cpu socket when i installed the damn thing.

you are scaring me, i have heard of this problem before, i just shipped a pc to my parents, but it had a fairly standard hsf

i was tempted to ship it without it attached, but they would never get it on right

maybe i start only shipping p4 systems

hey, that is an idea, use those air pillow bags inside the case, just make sure the case is an easy open style and make sure the reciever knows to remove them

good luck!

suggestions on how to send to a non-computer saavy person would be better than out right saying it was a bonehead move. I thought about sending it spereately but this has to be mounted with the mobo out of the case and my bro is not capable of this.

also, consider dell, micron, and all the other pc manufacturers that ship out computers w/ the heatsink on....there's generally nothing wrong w/ leaving the heatsink on, but in the case of the slk800 and those gargantuan hulk clips, i would have been more cautious.

just had this happen to me not too long ago.

I bought a system and when I received it the HSF was rolling
around inside the case 🙁. Luckily all it ruined was the $50
video card.

If he's not computer savvy, why did you install such a large heatsink on it in the first place? Why not install something easier to attach and lighter?

Unless your name is Dell, ship with the HS off.

I built a box for my g/f, shipped it with the HS packaged separately. I included a small amount of AS3, & walked her through the install over the phone. Took about a half hour with both her & her mom working on it, but they did it.

Has worked beautifully from day one.

No matter what heatsink I use it needs to be installed while mobo is out of the case due to room restraint. It has an SLK800 on it because thats what I had. Why buy one when that was there to use? as someone has said OEMs ship with heatsinks attached and have no problem. This one is a little large granted, but it still seems like it should have stayed for the trip. Still calling someone a bonehead without some useful tips for them is just rude.

Once again for those in the cheap seats. I too thought about sending with it off and having him attach but in order to do this removal of the mobo is necessary, and this I dont want him doing nor does he.

I said it was intended in the nicest possible way. 🙂 And any tip is obvious....ship with a lighter hsf unit. I've shipped PCs with light, simple units for non-pc savvy people and it shipped fine.

This is why you tightly fill the inside of the case with non-static foam or remove the heatsink...

Non-Static foam sounds like what I need. Where would I get this or is all foam anti-static?

Cheap seats? Between the two of us, I have successfully shipped a PC to a computer newbie & you have not. The cheap seats are all yours, my friend.

The mistakes you made:

1) Overkill - A HS that requires removal of the motherboard to mount is not necessary for a newbie
2) Shipping with the HS installed

The only way I would ship a heavy heatsink attached to the MoBo is if it was one of those that actually was bolted on with bolts running through the motherboard. If it's one of those that just uses clips...no way jose. That thing gets a nice jolt and it's off of there and gouging the piss out of every piece of silicon inside that case....as you have witnessed.

what i meant by cheap seats is that you are not listening entirely to what I have said and are missing a few key things I stated. its an expression here. I too have successfully shipped PC's before friend. Just not one with a SLK800 which is why I was asking for other people stories about shipping with exremely large heatsinks such as this one. Once again you missed my entire take on this. its not the HSF that prohibits mounting while in the case. It is the case itself that doesnt leave enough room by the top set of clips to mount ANY hsf while the mobo is installed. If it was just as simple as a different HSF I would have ordered a different one, but I had this on hand so I used it. I have never witnessed a HSF fall off any other time I shipped them and never thought that this one would have enough force to pull the pegs off. We all make mistakes at some point. If I had thought it was going to pull the pegs off I would have gotten something alse, but shipping without one installed was not an option at all

i had this happen before. it was a celeron 566 on a slotket with a huge hsf. big mistake. ended up purchasing ANOTHER 25 dollar heatsink. we all le arn from our mistakes 🙂

Well, at least you did insure it!

Which will certainly be denied by UPS considering the circumstances.

How so? It still had to recieve a fair amount of shock(dropped) for the clips to be broke off. I can clearly show them it broke off. I have dropped the tower accidentally myself after it was made. Granted it only fell maybe 2 feet, but sink stayed on and fully intact. So a drop greater than 2 feet had to do this, which is clearly transit damage. We shall see.

Take out the Heatsink and PSU. Trust me, a brand spanking new case from newegg.com had the PSU barely hanging on the case by it's screws, the little metal platform it's supposed to lay on bent and left the PSU hanging!!!
