sending a check via mail to open a checking account

opening a Washington Mutual Account to get a $75 gift card. to open it, I need to send them a check for $1 made out to myself. I have to sign the back right? it makes my financial spider sense tingle to send an endorsed check through the mail.

Send registered US Mail.

Then only the bank will open it.

True but if his worried about some-one absconding with the check then eat the difference. He is trying to claim much more than that anyhow.

I would expect that there is no Washington Mutual branches near him.

make it out to yourself and sign it, dont sign the back.

if you make it to youself, only you can cash/deposit it... if you endorse the back, anyone can. it is only $1.00 but still...

that's what I thought at first, but if I don't sign it, what authorizes BoA to release the dollar to Wash Mutual to open the new account?

Find someone who is near a Wash Mutual branch, paypal them the funds required and mail the signature paperwork to the bank and/or the person.
