Derided by conservatives as "amnesty," the proposal could be amended but senators on both sides of the aisle say they doubt it will be dramatically altered.

"By caving in to the Democrats this morning, Bill Frist pushed the Senate towards the biggest illegal alien amnesty in American history," he said. "It is a sad day for legal immigrants who embrace this country by following our laws,

Mexican government is pleased with exporting their poor:

Mexico's foreign secretary told reporters in a statement that the agreement was a "positive step toward the approval of a migration accord."

If this bill passes it will give the Republicans a huge bump in support in a few years when the illegals can vote and.
On the other hand it will immediately alienate a few Republican voters who are against "amnesty".
It's good long term strategic move but will hurt them for a few years.
I don't see the House going for this so I think its a dead issue.

Unfortunately, I see the amnesty passing with a strong majority. BOTH sides want it, whether they publicly admit it or not.

I doubt this a dead issue. It's another wedge issue which affects many people one way or the other. Illegals want to get in and old immigrants (who came here generations ago) want to close the door. There's never going to be common ground on this issue. But posturing makes good politics :D

More than a few republicans and conservatives are against amnesty. As it is, this is just a sneaky way of getting blanket amnesty. No one will have been here for less than 2-years when it comes down to it, and no one in government will be willing to press the issue. I suspect we'll be having this same debate in 10-years, only then it will be against the backdrop of twice as many illegals DEMANDING a free ride into the US.

Nice to see we live in a country of the people, by the people, and for the people. The people that don't think the laws apply to them, that is.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican, said yesterday's developments did not bode well.

"Bill Frist pushed the Senate towards the biggest illegal alien amnesty in American history," he said.

"It is a sad day for legal immigrants who embrace this country by following our laws, and it is a sad day for all Americans who are concerned about our national and economic security.

Passing this crap will be the straw that breaks the camel's back in the U.S.

I predict massive revolt within both parties and the public outcry will certianly drive political backtracking as a result.

5-13-2006 Bush to Announce Mexican Amnesty Monday Night During Prime Time Speech

WASHINGTON - "It obviously at this point is just a mess," new White House press secretary Tony Snow said good naturedly, summing up his rocky first question-and-answer session with reporters.

Snow smoothly defended Bush's nominee for CIA director, Gen. Michael Hayden, and new, low approval ratings, parried with reporters about the president's prime-time immigration speech on Monday and stuck steadfastly to the administration policy of refusing to discuss reports of an NSA program to build a database of millions of Americans' everyday telephone calls.

Wow... just wow.

DC is like the dome in The Truman Show. Once they get inside they have no idea what the real world is like. It's almost psychotic.

They refuse to investigate businesses and people using the same dead guy's SS# for the 1000th time.
They inform the Mexican government as to the locations of citizen patrol groups.
They allow cities and states to refuse to uphold federal laws.

Does the capitol have lead plumbing? Did they replace the fluoride in the water with LSD? What is going on here?

How does an illegal immigrant prove that they have been here for two years?

Shouldn't we seal off the border and then figure out what to do about the people who are here illegally? Otherwise we'll grant them all citizenship, millions more figure out how to penetrate our border. It is unrealistic to think we can solve the problem of illegal border crossings overnight.

All this oddness as you see it is the result of wanting to be reelected. I do not know why it strikes you as strange. There is only one moral principle and it is getting the most votes. Nothing else matters.

Our government is doing what it does best, it is ensuring its reelection. pathetic.

So, our government says, in effect, "Hey! If you are good enough to be a lawbreaker for 2 years without getting caught, we want you for our own.". I wonder how many years you have to get away with it before you are considered good enough for Congress?

So, are they going to let the millions of people who left legally to apply for citizenship as well as those in the US legally? Are they going to let the millions who left to come back?

Are those who follow the law going to be punished and those who break them be rewarded?

So you cross over, get some company to forge documents and suddenly you've been here two years on your first day and you sign up to vote. Is Vicente Fox on our Ballots?

That brings up an interesting point--how are we going to determine someone has been here 2 years?

My guess is there'll be a stipulation where you have to prove it-- primarily through tax forms or some other official notice from your place of employment.

I don't think amnesty gives them a US citizenship? Maybe just a permanent green card.

That would be permanent residence--at that point it is only a matter of time and taking a test before you are a citizen.

Yeah but their are really no benefits from a permanent residence to a citizenship besides voting.

Are they gonna refund all the money and compensate me for my time it took to do it legally? I think they should clear the backlog of people who are doing it properly than to give these guys a free ride. Hell, it took me longer than two years to do it legally.

I wonder if this will fly or is it just another "throw it out there knowing it will get shot down but pass the failure onto someone else"trick.

gee, imagine how those persons who are in the process of immigrating here legally feel. especially those who have been waiting patiently for years to do it right.

i wouldn't want to be the immigration clerk to explain it to them how it's faster to become a citizen if you do it illegally.

remember folks, this program will not be about being magnanimous, moral and keeping a tradition of open arms alive; it's primarily about our politician's obsession with self-preservation and about ensuring the availability of cheap labor to US business interests.

like so many other programs rushed and crammed down the public's throat by the republican administration and republican controlled congress, this one will be even worse. due to very influential special interests, there will be many innocent immigrants falling through the purposely induced vague cracks, crevices and secret trapdoors that this piece of legislation will be rife with. espeially so after the insider corporate lobbyists get through massaging it to their liking.
