I will send him a scathing rebuke for this assine posture. It is clear who lines his pockets, isn't it? If for political expediency we don't like your postion, we will destroy your personal property and exempt ourselves from liabilty. Ya, thats due process, isn't it? This coming from the head of the judiciary commitee in the senate. He needs to be retired from congress, and damn soon.:disgust::|

Sometimes you have to wonder if these idiots, a.k.a. elected "representatives", even bother to read the legislation passed along by their masters ^H^H^H^H^H^H contributors. If any other industry asked for the unilateral right to destroy citizens' property based on suspicions -- no presumption of innocence, no trial, no oversight -- even the most unscrupulous legislator would tell them to pound sand. When one of the entertainment cartels suggests it, they fall all over themselves to accommodate them. Do these crooks have the negatives of Hatch in compromising positions with barnyard animals, or even worse, a Democrat?

The mind boggles.

What's funny is that Hatch's extreme idea was rebuked even by firms working to protect copyrights and prevent online piracy. lol!
No one is interested in destroying anyone's computer," replied Randy Saaf of MediaDefender Inc., a secretive Los Angeles company that builds technology to disrupt music downloads. One technique deliberately downloads pirated material very slowly so other users can't.
Hatch cracks me up. He can go from very moderate and reasonable to very extreme and unreasonable, depending on the issue.

And good luck unemploying Hatch, he's very popular in his state.

Hatch isn't as popular as you think. And there are enough voters now in Utah to oust him. What happens in Utah is many voters just back what gets the most noise in politics, and that is Republicans as of late. The tide is turning. This war with Iraq and the failing economy is hurting a great many in this state. Retirees are having to go back to work for minimum wage jobs because their 401k's are dried up. That means that when the voters go to vote, they will vote with there wallet, which is empty. It was full when the Dems controlled things. They will remember that, and any viable candidate will make it just as likely that Bush will not win this state, and when they vote, its usually just a party ticket. Vote out Bush, and you vote out all republicans, including Hatch. Many in this state feel he has brought bad feelings about Utah and Mormons when he spouts this kind of rubbish. So, with a good respectable Democratic alternative, Bush may not win, and neither will Hatch. Hatch has done precious little to help Utah. He has worn out his welcome. Utah wants fresh, young, postive thinkers representing Utah, not old farts like Hatch.

Luckily, most motherboards nowadays don't go high enough to fry the CPU(especially OEM boards; Dell, HP, etc), although you can get close. A more likely method would be a FlashROM attack, a BootSector attack, or a general attempt to cripple Windows.

How is it that we allow anyone as ignorant and vindictive in a position of power in this country? Anyone with an attitude like that is a menace!

Ask the voting public of Utah I guess. Or actually ask the NON-voting public since they are the ones that allow it to happen.

Well, I'm pretty sure they I won't have to worry about my computers if they try to take our guns away, since either they'll all be dead trying to take them away or I'll be dead fighting them off.

Tough words, you say? Hell yeah! Wanna call my bluff? ;)

Wasn't all that just a copy/past job from the last Democratic promise to unseat Hatch? How'd that turn out?

How you gonna keep um down on the farm after they've seen preemptive war. It's time to attack everything. It's the universal solution.

CKG, in Georgia you will not have your Computer physically at all to fight for it. Under the new Georgia Computer Protection Act (They've updated the Law they charged me under) your Computer is considered "Contraband" if there is suspected stolen MP3's or Movies and they immediately confiscate your Computer with little hope for getting it back even if you somehow manage to not be convicted of the accusations.

Georgia Computer Law making Computers "Contraband".

Also the ISP that you have an account with is charged by the State to shut down your account within 3 business days, failure of them to do so results in hefty fines and possible Jail time.

This is one very stupid government idea that I hope doesn't fly, but unfortunately it probably will. Yes, let's just throw out due process (as if they haven't already in the Verizon and Kazaa song swappers case) and let the RIAA become the second branch of law enforcement.

fighting a lost cause though, eventually ISP's will be satelite based. There are already ones on offshore platform running gambling rings and kiddie porn sites they cant touch, a music swapper will just buy server space there. There will always be countries willing to not recognize US copyright as long as there is greater profit in that direction.

Are they ever planning on gonig after IMesh? or will they leave them alone because they operate out of Israel (another one who does nto recognize US copyright, u r welcome for your existence BTW)?

I know, unfortunately it seems they have shifted their force to computer grabbing from gun grabbing.

I'd like to see his campaign contributions to see how much the RIAA bribed him with.

The new Georgia Law states they will specifically target Foreign Cybercrime in their Country.

(1) When properly served with a search warrant issued by a Georgia court, an out-of-state business subject to this Code section shall provide to the applicant all records sought pursuant to that warrant within five business days of receipt, including those records maintained or located outside this state.

Like someone said these places may not recognize Georgia Legal Authority but that will not stop them from trying.

(2) 'Internet' means the myriad computer and telecommunications facilities, including equipment and operating software, which comprise the interconnected world-wide network of networks that employ the transmission control protocol/Internet protocol or any predecessor or successor protocols to such protocol to communicate information of all kinds by wire or radio.

16-9-105.
(a) Any computer or other electronic equipment which is used or intended for use in any manner to commit a violation of Code Section 16-9-93, 16-9-101, 16-11-37, 16-12-100, 16-12-100.1, 16-12-100.2, 16-5-90, or 16-5-91 is contraband and forfeited to the state and no person shall have a property interest in it. Such property may be seized or detained in the same manner as provided in Code Section 16-13-49 and shall not be subject to replevin, conveyance, sequestration, or attachment.

It doesn't matter because they intend to just come and take away your Computer completely.

I think he just needs his head surgically removed from his arse. Plus maybe his hands surgically removed from the pockets of the MPAA/RIAA.

Heh, dmcowen674 thinks that when the laws of one state refer to an "out-of-state" business, it means a foreign country. Talk about sheltered and isolated...SHEESH!
