Senator blasts NSA chief: ‘What you feel isn’t relevant, admiral’
Link

Sen. King: "What is the legal basis for your refusal to testify to this committee?"
DNI Coats: "I'm not sure I have a legal basis."

Caught part of the hearing. Very contentious. Why would anyone want to work for this guy? He makes everyone in his orbit look like a fool.

Glad to see someone acting like an adult and turning up the heat on people acting like fucking weasels in DC. "I don't believe it's appropriate."? Please.

Honestly, these guys basically gave a big FU to the Senate today. The Senate needs to decide if it wants to be a coequal branch of government.

That old guy is something else. Ripped into them.

Even Burr (R) laid into them at the end. Same with McCain. These 4 are on thin ice as far as not answering the committee on unclassified questions.

I'd also point out, that not one of them stated "that didn't happen" in regards to POTUS asking them to work on Comey. A simple answer (which they can't give, because it's false) would have ended it.

Isn't this the definition of contempt?

I think so. And this isn't the House either, this is the Senate. I think they need to drag them back and force them to answer under the threat of contempt charges if they can do that.

Sure, likely it is. But that would require someone with a set of balls to actually enforce something. Same thing with Emoluments. Same thing with money laundering. Same thing with leaking. Same thing with logan act. Same thing with Hatch act. Same thing with espionage. Same thing with lying on clearance papers. Same thing with conflicts of interest.

Eh, you get the point.

But you don't understand!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111122222222222 The Democrats may have been completely wrong about the previous 5043424342432 things that would end Trump's campaign / presidency, but Comey's testimony definitely will be the thing to end it, their mommies told them so :)

Would there be value in Dems and select Republicans trying to hold him to it even knowing they wouldn't have the votes?

Are their statements in these hearings subject to perjury laws with the related prosecution for lying ? They went out of their way to say they didn't feel pressured, willing to say that, but not say they weren't asked. Reads like a tacit admission and attempt to sugarcoat it with a subjective feeling about Trump's requests to them to interfere in the Trump/Russia investigation.

Possible. Not likely.

DSF in the past: 'I'm just waiting for the facts'.

DSF when someone's about to testify on the facts: 'I know this is nothing before he even testifies'.

I guess he gave up on waiting for the facts and decided on them ahead of time. I for one am totally shocked at the hypocrisy.

It doesn't seem you are too concerned with all of Trump's illegalities. I'm glad the joy you get from the Dem's losing means so much more.

Man oh man, look at this 'nothing burger' from Comey's opening statement:

https://www.intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/files/documents/os-jcomey-060817.pdf

I immediately prepared an unclassified memo of the conversation about Flynn and discussed the matter with FBI senior leadership. I had understood the President to be requesting that we drop any investigation of Flynn in connection with false statements about his conversations with the Russian ambassador in December

It's now official and under oath (well, assuming nothing changes by tomorrow afternoon) The President of the United States asked the director of the FBI to stop investigating/prosecuting his national security adviser for lying to the FBI. If you call that a 'nothing burger' then you have gone so far off the deep end there's no coming back. If Obama had done that you would have gone absolutely ballistic.

DSF, let's make a bet: if this turns out to be, as you say, a "nothing burger," we'll stop mocking you. If it turns out to be a something burger, as indeed it looks very likely to, you stop defending Drumpf and anyone in his administration from here on. Sound fair?

The quality of trolling on this board has taken such a nosedive. At least DSF sorta tries.

The Comey statement and the context it provides (plus probable backup from notes and people who could be called as witnesses) is beyond devastating. This is just to kick things off too before Senators start asking questions.

The only way it could be worse is if Trump scrawled "Please obstruct justice for me" on a WH napkin and signed it in sharpie then gave it to Comey.

Before I forget...

This might as well be treated as part 1. Lets see what happens after the closed session.
Might get buried by the Comey testimony...

"We are in a public session here, and I do not feel that it is appropriate for me to address confidential information."

KING: What you feel isn’t relevant, admiral. What you feel is not the answer. The answer is, why are you not answering the questions? Is it an invocation of executive privilege. If there is, let’s hear about it. If there isn’t, answer the questions.

ROGERS: I stand by the comments I've made. I’m not interested in repeating myself, sir, and I don’t mean that in a contentious way.

KING: Well I do mean it in a contentious way, I don’t understand why you’re not answering our questions. You can’t — when you were confirmed, before the armed services committee you took an oath: “do you solemnly swear to give the committee the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you, God.” You answered yes to that.

ROGERS: And I’ve also answered that those conversations are classified and it is not appropriate in an open forum, to discuss those classified conversations.

KING: What is classified about a conversation involving whether or not you should intervene in the FBI investigation?

ROGERS: Sir, I stand by my previous comments.

KING: You swore that oath to tell us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and today you are refusing to do so. What is the legal basis for your refusal to testify to this committee?

COATS: I’m not sure I have a legal basis, but I’m more than willing to sit before this committee … during its investigative process in a closed session and answer your questions.

KING: Well we’re going to be having a closed session in a few hours. Do you commit to me that you’re going to answer these questions in a direct and unencumbered way?

COATS: I plan to do that but I do have to work through the legal counsel at the White House relative to whether or not they’re going to exercise executive [privilege].

Well, I guess he could have said 'I order you to drop this investigation', but this is still incredibly bad.

Any bets on if/how DSF tries to pretend this is nothing?
