US lawmakers will ditch a plan to ban assault weapons, all but killing off a key part of a gun control campaign prompted by a recent school massacre.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said her proposal would be left out of the firearms control bill.

Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid made the decision, saying the proposal could not get enough votes.

good, because 99% of it wouldn't have made a difference anyway, just like the last one.

I'm not sure that's a good thing, I would have rather had it in there so the whole thing could get canned in the senate. Now you're going to have some other garbage get passed, which is equally useless in fighting actual crime but yet imposes more restrictions on law abiding citizens.

Reid's not as dumb as he looks. He knows the mood of the country on this. It's all politics. And the house wouldn't have passed the ban anyway, so no big deal.

Hmm, gun/ammo sales have been at unprecedented levels for months upon months now.. and nothing has happened to guns. The Obama admin continues to be the best thing that ever happened to the industry. :p

Damn, I was hoping it would be put to a vote so Republicans could use those votes against the Senate Democrats in 2014. It would have failed anyways, but it would have put them on record.

Well and the whole gun control not working at all thing. We need to keep felons in prison longer. If you ever pull a weapon on someone to take tbeir wallet, you will never do anything positive for society and you will continue your life of crime.

So basically they'll revisit the issue and dig it up after the election if they win enough seats back.

Sure, but that's been a fundamental law of political behavior since the dawn of time. The good news is with the advent of the internet gun rights supporters are more organized and coordinated now than ever before, gun sales are WAY up, especially the so-called "assault rifles"are up, the number of gun owners is increasing.

None of that is any excuse for complacency, but we're in better form now than we've ever been. If we're good about it, in a decade or two the traditional gun-ban may very well be a forgotten, marginalized relic of policy.

Good, since it would have made the law unconstitutional.

If you actually read the Constitution then just about all gun legislation is unconstitutional...but the liberals have never let the Constitution stand in their way.

Feinstein doesn't care, she got her face on the front pages again. That's all that matters. It's always about re-election and her state will eat this up.

Every politician gets to claim a win... And don't any of you forget that. Feinstein gets to tell her supporters that she went to bat for gun control... Reid gets to tell pro-gun Nevada that he acted in their interests, and pro-gun politicians get to take credit for rallying against the dems. It is great political theater is it not?

Either way.. .glad it is getting dropped though like others here I'd haveliked it to be pushed to a vote as part of the overall package.

NOW, maybe we can get ammo more reliably as well firearms. I'm having a hell of a time finding the new piece I've got my mind set on versus settling for something off the shelf.

I really wish I had gotten a few guns and and ammo before all of the gun control discussion started.....could have made a pretty significant amount of money. Oh well, maybe next time.

Buying with intent to sell is illegal. I've seen USED guns go for 4-5k over retail....

Yeah, I WANTED her stuff in there, just like WA had the whole "can enter your home whenever we want if you own guns" thing - it'd help torpedo the entire effort.

Yea, I wouldn't let my guard down though. They announced something similar in all the papers in Oregon a while ago and then tried to cram it through real fast under the radar.
