The thing about a fence is that it is just a fence.
They can easily be defeated.
We need a workable imigration policy to go with the fence.
Otherwise it is pointless.

It's much easier, safer, and quicker to just fly into this country through an airport.

Than it is to walk a few miles with absolutely no security check?

It'd be an even better idea if the employers who are hiring these people were fined up the ass. Otherwise, this whole thing is just some more empty promises and payoffs to Halliburton (who will also be responsible for fixing the holes in the wall when the employers in this country drive their illegal employee transport trucks right through it)

Health care and education is broke, because of the illegals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Backers of illegal immigration at a rally near Los Angeles took down an American flag at a U.S. post office, stamped on it and replaced it with a Mexican flag as police looked on, according to witnesses and a video of the event.

Police officers in Maywood, Calif., Saturday eventually came to the pole to remove the flag but had bottles and rocks thrown at them, a radio listener named Sandra reported to the Terry Anderson show, heard on KRLA in Los Angeles....

I think the fence is a "feel good" solution. It might look nice and pretty, but I'm not sure it'll stop anyone, especially since it only covers 1/3 of the border.

The Chinese build a 4,200 mile (6 x 700) long wall more than 2,500 years ago.

Walled cities and the moat went out of fashion a while ago.

I wonder when politicians will get with the times and allocate funds to crack down on employers, since only that will stem the tide.

What are you joking? You can't even get on an international flight if you don't have the proper passport/visa in order.

I think the Chinese Wall was quite effective at keeping out the Mongolians for much of their history.

Again, it's about tendencies not absolutes. The wall is not a failure if some Mexicans still slip past it. The goal is to make it harder to come across, which my guess is that it will, because right now thousands of people blatantly run across it each day.

Not going to work. The employers can easily say, "It's not our business to harass our potential employees, to make sure they're actually American." And if they did start doing that, there would be an absolute outrage. Hell, the Democratic party throws up a shitstorm anytime Republicans propose a measure to actually check someone's ID or citizenship when they show up to vote. Imagine the fiasco they and their supporters would create if laws were passed mandating that you had to prove your citizenship before you could get a job.

This nation was founded on immigrants - don't turn them back

It wasn't founded on illegal immigrants. I think we as a nation have a right to say who we allow into our country and how they should go about it.

I'd be happy to support Bush's fence...IF it would actually do something besides waste money.
Living in Kahleeforneeya, (I mean northern Aztlan :roll;) we are awash with illegal immigrants., and can see some of the problems they bring with them.
But then again, I'm one of the very few Democrats who would also support sending them ALL home...let them apply for citizenship just like the rest of the world has to...
Mexico has brutal ways of dealing with illegal immigrants, maybe we should reciprocate? Nah, but we DO need to find a way to keep them out, and deal with the ones we already have.
I DO support enforcing the laws against hiring "undocumented" workers, and think we should push harder on the enforcement for them. Make employing illegals cost employers, and soon enough, they'll stop hiring them.

This just popped up on my news page...
Mexican Leader Compares Border Fence to Berlin Wall...
Building a wall around US a 'huge error': Mexican president-elect

"OTTAWA (AFP) - The United States committed a "huge error" in choosing to build a wall between itself and its southern neighbor, Mexico's president-elect Felipe Calderon said during a state visit to Canada, comparing it with the Berlin Wall.

"The wall will not solve any problem. Humanity made a huge mistake by building the Berlin Wall, and I believe that today the United States is committing a grave error in building the wall on our border," he said.

US President George W. Bush on Thursday signed into law a bill authorizing construction of a 1,100-kilometer (700-mile) fence along a third of the US border with Mexico.

Some 1.2 billion dollars in funding were earmarked for the fence, in a bid to stanch the steady flow of illegal immigrants into the United States.

Calderon said the fence would be expensive to US taxpayers and lead to more Mexican deaths. Some 400 Mexicans died trying to cross the border last year, he noted.

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he accepts US concerns about a safe and secure border, but added: "We obviously caution against things that can cause unnecessary barriers, not just to trade, but to the ordinary exchange of tourism and social relationships between our countries."

It's just more Congressional symbolism over substance.

If they really wanted to put an end to this, they could start by jailing employers who knowingly or recklessly hire illegals, they could build a fence, they could start mass deportations, they could cut all government handouts for illegals, etc.

But they don't. I'll be surprised if they fund the 700 mile fence and if it's actually constructed.

That's what I was wondering... Are there any details about the fence? Where is it located? Is it a electrocuted fence? Is this fence actually going to solve any problems?

I am kind of doubtfull that this fence will actually have any effect...

A "Keep Out" sign would be about six billion dollars cheaper and equally effective. However, this will be more funny when it gets stolen and sold as scrap metal.

...and the American people will fall back asleep, content knowing that the mighty border fence has ended mass illegal immigration. In the meantime half of Mexico will make its way across the border, the American lower middle class will become impoverished, the nation's population will head towards 500 million, and the the U.S. will become a third world country. GGs American Sheeple.
