Seems pretty idiotic to me to support a filibuster that already has the votes to overcome it...Not the mention there is no reason Alito should be filibustered, he has a great resume.

Far more idiotic to NOT support a filibuster when it is a option that you can use. A filibuster is a option, even if it is short, and given the lack luster and poor judicial history of Alito is called for.

Well, it gives the Republicans a chance to remove filibuster as an option altogether, thus ensuring that their consolidation of power cannot be challenged.

Actually, it makes Democrats look good for a change.

How?

Each time the put down a requirement a nominee had to meet it was met, so they kept dreaming up new requirements?

Alito got the approval of every major organization related to lawyers and judges, just as the Democrats said was required.

In other words, they will keep drawing lines in the sand and backing up before realizing they went of the cliff.

I don't mind going after nominees that are truly flawed but damn, Alito isn't one of those types. Kerry and a few others are so heavily into the pockets of big money they don't care what their consituents say anymore. They are grandstanding and it will bite them in the ass.

Bout time dems showed some balls - you turn your back on those Republican snakes and they'll stick it in deep - look at iraq.

I would'nt even talk abortion - but his total lack of regaurd for the consitution and separtion of powers.

Votes short from what I've read thus far. He will have to snag one somewhere and Alito could still pick up a couple of more Dems.

As Spector put it bluntly earlier on the floor of the Senate they have enough to break a filibuster.

55 reps

3 Dems on record, Johnson, Byrd and Nelson so far voting in the affirmtive.

2 Dems on record stating they will not support a filibuster, Landrieu and Salazar, although Salazar has stated he will vote against him.

60 votes

QFT. A filibuster serves NO purpose at this point. They should be baking Alito a welcome cake so Alito doesn't go holding grudges. Grandstanding like this is just begging for repercussions.

What a shock. Another desperate liberal gasping for breath.

Kerry and his party made fools of themselves trying to stop Alito and his confirmation is imminent.

It's a good laugh though. But this shows the Democrats are not interested in the will of the people.

If this was the case he would not net 50 votes. Nominees haven't in the past.

Kerry may be spouting off now and then back down to act stateman like.

The "Gang of 14" setup the rules/guidelines to preventthing type of fiasco.

IF kerry breaks the agreement; the REpublicans may start ratching up the screws to the Dems by using differnet rules to slap them down. Then "gentlemans club" may cease to exist.

here is something i got in my supreme court brief email the other day

If you are not too exhausted from watching C-SPAN?s riveting coverage of the Alito confirmation hearings (where the bipartisan strategy appeared to be to establish Judge Alito?s qualifications by demonstrating that we are better off having anyone BUT certain members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Court), I give you a bare-bones recap of the Court?s recent opinion action.

If they manage to block Alito, I think Bush should nominate Kennedy and let the fun begin on the judiciary committe.

Now that would be great entertainment watching him try to defend his ethics and history lmao.

Why I don't support many of Alito possitions, the man deserves an up and down comfirmation vote. If he is comfirmed so be it.

He would never accept the nomination.
