This isn't really about Warren's progressive ideology, it's about history which says populists (right or left) don't win. Populists tend to either run as a third candidate in the election, or cause a more centrist member of their party to run as an Independent. When a populist gets the nomination outright and runs without a third candidate they tend to get annihilated in the general election (see 1972). When they run as a third candidate (like 1948 or 1912) they tend to split the vote and deliver it to the centrist candidate of the opposite party.

Obviously it's not impossible for her to win, but it would almost certainly take either a supremely flawed GOP opponent to completely implode after nomination or both parties to splinter and be a 4-person race.
