Sounds good but consider this:

How many people who buy a Sempron will install a 64 bit OS?

How many people who buy a sempron will have 4+ Gigs of memory?

In fact, how many people really do any of these things (yet) anyway?

Don't get me wrong, 64 bit is great, but a 64 bit Sempron is a bit like putting a super-charger and NOS kit into Grandma's Towncar.

This is great news. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Its pretty strange how much AMD was really advertising 64-bit with the A64, and yet its budget K8 (i.e. the Sempron) didn't have it.

TankGuys, I think you will find that there are some mainstream consumer programs, like CD-rippers which convert files into highly compressed WMA or whatever, which will benefit nicely.

yeah, but pretty soon everything will be 64bit. and people that buy a sempron, will probably keep it for a long time, and in a long time, everyone will have 64bit.

the current a64's will be the budget once x2 hits mainstream, so why does AMD even bother with "semprons" going 64 bit news?

You just hit the nail on the head. Essentially as X2 becomes mainstream, the budget line can adopt 64-bit w/o competeing with the cash-cow. Semps could go 64-bit today, but that would make them A64s. So as 64-bit becomes yesterdays innovation budget lines will pick them up.

MS said longhorn will be 64 bit at the AMD/MS event in Chicago, so these semprons will be nicely available at low prices to actually take advantage of what Longhorn can offer. Yay for that ;)

Yeah....doesn't this just turn Semprons into A64s (w/lower cache in some cases)?
