Advanced Micro Devices plans to develop a new line of processors that will serve the needs of the basic PC market, the company said Monday.

AMD's "Sempron" processor will be launched sometime in the second half of 2004, when the company will provide more details on the new processor. An AMD spokeswoman declined to disclose whether the Sempron would be based on an entirely new architecture, or would simply be a rebranding of an existing product. However, she said that the Sempron will replace the existing 32-bit Duron processor in emerging markets.

Well a lot of people think these are the Paris(AMD codename) chip, whcih was rumored to be an AXP ported to the K8 architecture with no 64bit support. But I read soemthign in the anandtech news section once that said AMD would be making 64bit CPU's only by 2005. Not sure how accurate it was, I believe it was by an unamed AMD spokesperson, so who knows. Really not much is actually known about them, Paris was rumored to be socket 754, but they have not yet listed the socket typ eof sempron. So we are kinda at a wait and see type of place.
