SEMPRON OR XP CHIP?!

I want to build a second but budget** computer
-mainly for simple applications/internet/cd-dvd burning/watching movies

Im not sure whether to buy:

Name- Athlon XP 2800+
Frequency- 2.083GHz
FSB- 333MHz
L1 Cache- 64KB+64KB
L2 Cache- 512KB
Socket- A
64bit/HyperTransport- No
OEM $86

Name- Sempron 2600+
Frequency- 1.6GHz
FSB- 800MHz
L1 Cache- 64KB+64KB
L2 Cache- 128KB
Socket- 754
64bit/HyperTransport- No
Retail $75

The CPU frequency is obviously much higher on the XP. Then again the FSB speed is much higher on the new Sempron because it uses 754 sockets (AMD64 compatible). The L2 cache is also quadruple on the XP. Lastly, the fact of one processor being an OEM instead of retail. Those being the differences and similar prices, which is more highly recommended.

I want to overclock it a little; therefore the stock heatsink/fan will be unnecessary because of an upgrade. I also have a corsair xms 512 ddr400, im not sure if the ram im using would be a factor in choosing the chip because of its cache or fsb.

If you guys would explain which is more valuable FSB or L2 CACHE. Is the CPU frequency the vital key in purchasing a processor? Is it best to go with the chip with higher L2 CACHE and simply overclocking it?

I would appreciate opinions and recommendations on these chips and even suggestions of other chips of similar value and performance.

THANKS

id get the sempron. should be able to do 2.4ghz pretty easily i should think. That and the on die memory controller make it faster than xp

The Sempron S754 are great bargains. they suposedly overclock really nicely too. and the lack of Cache doesn't hurt gaming as much as you think on the K8 architecture. Xbitlabs did a thorough review on the cache factor and the Semprons.

Any idea on which motherboard you're getting? The limited s754 is a better buy than the fading skt A if you're buying all parts new. (no spare parts around, etc) Unless you really need the extra MHZ the Sempron is a better buy but look into at least a 2800+ if you can afford it.

I have the corsair xms 512ddr400c2 and a maxtor 40 gig left over, thats why i want to build a second budget comp. Im thinking of getting integrated graphics on my motherboard, instead of going and spending a few dollars on a cheap card. I intend this computer for movie watching and internet, is there major difference what im going to be doing if i get the integrated. Some dependable motherboard suggestions would be kind as well.

reviews state the DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 is an awesome mb for oc'ing

should i risk this refurbished one from newegg for 65 bucks?

Indeed that is a great board, I have one, good stuff.

If I was you I would save a little more money and get a AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Newcastle Integrated into Chip FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor - $124. This is a great bang for the buck proc, and a worthy upgrade for ~$30 more.

Nobody really knows how socket-754 Semprons compare to Athlon XPs, except that the Sempron 3100+ is about as fast as the Athlon XP 3200+. However, many enthusiasts, including myself, suspect that socket-754 is now king over socket A, even with $70-$100 CPUs.

I bought a Socket A Sempron 2400 awhile ago and it's OC'd to 2.0 ghz with ease. Are there any good budget OC boards? Maybe I'll try out a S754 with another Sempron chip.

If you're buying all NEW parts, I would just go with a socket 939 system, as the price difference is only like $100 (at least on the ones I've bee building).

I, personally, am building a socket A system... 'cause the 'price is right', so-to-speak.

For Socket A: If you're not OCing, go for a barton core (sempron?)... if you want to oc the bejesus out of that thing, and get a good price, look for an old Thoroughbred-B (get OCs max of 2.4-2.8 Ghz-ish).

For $184 (plus shipping) at NewEgg it's not bad for a basic PC....

46 bucks for a pc that isn't for gaming is a pretty big difference on a cpu.

Btw i wanted to know if that BIOSTAR mb is good for o/c either 754 chip.
If not what would be like the best 754 mb for o/c under..80 bucks

I have this $75 54 Soltek board and love it. Reviews are somewhat mixed but many (including me with a A64 3200+) have had good luck with it. Here's a thread on it.

having just upgraded myself, I found out that my new a64 3000+ was not that much faster than my xp3200+. Clock for clock I gained a little, but I had to oc quiet a bit to make it worth while. My xp maxed at 2.4ghz with a sandra score of around 9900 cpu, while the a64 3000+ venice maxes at 2.4 with a sandra score of 10100 cpu. Memory bandwidth almost doubled in my case, but it won't be as much as an improvement for your sempron.

well thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I now know what im going to get with my sempron chip. Thanks fellas =]
