Sempron or Athlon 64

I know for a fact that with very little effort the AMD Sempron 3100 (currently 115) bucks can outperform the living crap of the athlon 64 3400.

I also know that the athlon 64 is around 80 bucks more.

The epox mobo i want is 67 dollars, and was used in the test by X Bit labs to OC the system, and they say that using ddr 500 will allow me to successfully OC this mofo.

Question here is...

Since i'm selling my current rig for hopefully 220(+) bucks and my modded xbox for 150 to a friend, is it worth using 370 to build this OC'd system? Or is it possible to get a pretty decent system with PCI-Express for around the same amount +/- 20-30 bucks with the new 939 socket and 90 nm cpus.

Please instruct me o wise ones, cause i'm dying to get out of my current system, which includes........

AMD Athlon socet A 2200 (OC'd to 1900 mhz with a 166x11.5)
1052 mb 2700
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe

help me obi wan kenobi, you're my only hope.

wish i got the joke, but really i'm more interested in educated responses (not coming down on u but time is of the essence, my current rig is on ebay)

I thought your post was a joke.

Nomex is a flame resistant material. You are about to be burned alive if you can't back up what you said.

Care to elaborate on your claim?

Is your Nomex suit on?

This should be good 😉 (taking spectator nomex suit out of closet)

Yes, we are all quite ignorant of these things you simply "know as facts," so we can't really say much to you without further elaboration.

good lord TY gwag, i thought by that X Bits thingy that people had done research who were posting. Sorry i should have included the link. Ya, thats what i was thinking. Thanks gwag

Still waiting. Don't see any Sempron doing any such thing to an A64 3400+. Beating it by an average of 5% is nice, but it hardly supports the OP's claim.

I knew this would be a silly argument.

Gee, why don't you overclock an A64 and watch it outperform the living crap out of the overclocked Sempron 3100?

epox 754 m/b
a64 2800+ retail
2x512mb or 1x1gb ddr400 value ram

will run you about $320

epox 9nda3J m/b
a64 3000+ (winchester) retail
2x512mb ddr400 value ram

will run you about $370

those are my picks with a $370 budget. the epox board for 754 got the gold editors choice from AT, and the 939 (non "+") epox board for 939 is a tremendous value and under $100. dont like the epox board? go down to 2x256mb dimms and go for the MSI K8N neo2 platinum.

choosing the sempron 3100 over the athlon64 2800 is stupid, when 64 bit extensions and 256KB more L2 cache is only one or two dollars more.

for $370, if you need memory, cpu and a motherboard, you cant really step into the PCIe market. im sure you would need a new video card as well.

umm...

1. A64 2800 is same Ghz as Sempron 3100, Both 1.8
2. A64 2800 is 3% faster at stock speed due to 512 KB cache vs 256
3. A64 2800 is 64 bit compatable making it infinity faster than a Sempron 3100 on Win XP 64 coming next month
4. A64 2800 has NX bit which prevents malice/virus
5. A64 2800 will overclock the same as sempron 3100, retaining it's performance superiority thoughout overclock.
6. A64 2800 is $8 more money or 6%

Now you can see only a fool would buy a Sempron 3100 ATM.

EDIT BTW-
The 3400 is one of the best chips there is, @ $220 it hangs with a $650 3800 AND intels top chip..you should'nt go about doggin it when you don't even know the basics..

but but but 3100 is higher than 2800! 😛

I had the sempron 3100+ and it is a very nice overclocker. From the benches I ran, it is scales the exactly same as my newcastle 3000+ all the way to 2.5ghz. Although it wasn't rock solid stable after 2.43. Playing games and benching, no noticable difference at all. But my nc does overclock a little better, I'm at 2.6 24/7. Here are a couple of comparisons with the same exact hardware. I'd still get the a64 over the sempron, but there is really not a noticable difference.

Then the Athlon XP 3200+ is teh best! Who even cares about Semprons and A64's with their measly numbers! 😛

drop $190 (OEM) for a A64 3000+(939) then oc it to the level of the sempron(2500mhz) and it'll blow the sempron out of the water so fast...

well the sandra screen for a sempron dosent mention specs such as ram and stuff. the 2 systems probably have different configs.

3dMark03 is primarily a video card test and is not very useful for comparing CPU's.

Sandra is less than useless for nearly everything.

Still...as I said before, benches aren't everything. But in everyday use, if someone swapped a oc'd sempron for a oc'd a64 in someone's rig, how many people would notice any difference?

For one, Windows 64-bit would stop booting, and I'd be feeling awful Stabby.

The Sempron 3100+ overclocked to 2.52GHz was about 64°C hot when idle, and as high as 79°C hot in test applications

Remind me why we ever upgraded from a text based OS to a graphical one. Also, remind me why getting a faster cpu at all is more important. Why bother going to agp when you can still have video cards on the good old pci?

Get the picture?
