Trying to figure out which of these CPUs are better. They are both single core and extremely old I know. I am building a Frankenstein PC for fun and need to chose between these 2. I don't know which version of the CPUs these are if it comes down to the wire, but I can find out.

If it matters, it will be used for liiiiight gaming.

Also, they are too old for http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2.

Any help is appreciated.

Well the Sempron is a 2.3Ghz single core 45W processor, the Athlon 3500 could be several things, but I'm thinking it is probably 2.2Ghz 65W. They are both based on the old k8 architecture, I'm not 100% sure which is actually faster but the difference would be very minimal. Personally I'd go with the Sempron, it'll run a little cooler and draw less power.

SEMPRON!

It's 45nm and AM2, so will work with much cheaper DDR2 memory. All A64 3500+ (socket 754 and 939 models) require DDR1 memory, so it's more expensive and borderline impractical to try for 4GB for example.

Also with a cheap AM2+ mobo, you could upgrade the system to a used PhII or whatever down the line should you want more power out of that box.

Do you have these already?

I have at least 2 GB RAM and a mobo laying around for each. It's mostly just a matter of which one has more firepower with the stock fan as I'm trying to just mess around without spending a dime.

Will run on XP, so I will probably stop at 2-3 GB RAM anyways.

Oops, I meant 45W, not 45nm lol. Yes, definitely go with the 1300, just the mobo will be much much better. And upgrading in the future, should you decide to run Win7 or want more CPU power, will be 10,000x easier with an AM2 or AM2+ board than with Socket 939.

Stock v stock, they're going to be so close performance wise that you won't be able to tell a difference between them. They're both standard K8 single cores.

The AM2 1300 Sempron is 2.3ghz stock with 128K L1, 512K L2, 45W TDP, and a 800HT.
The 939 3500+ A64 is 2.2ghz stock with 128K L1, 512K L2, 89TDP, and a 1000HT.

the 1300 Sempron will overclock much easier as well. 3ghz or so should be possible with a decent cooler, and I'm sure 2.6ghz easily on stock cooling.

But yeah the absolute best thing to do is sell the 939 stuff while it's still worth at least a few bucks, and build the AM2 system.
