So I'm pricing a Dell C521 for use by my grandparents. It's probably more than they really need, but I would like it to last them a good long while, so I figure why not.

Anyway, I priced one with the Sempron 3400+ and one with the A64 3200+. The price difference turns out to be only $30 so I'm guessing it's probably worth the extra expense and probably better for a possible future VISTA upgrade, hence I also upgraded both configs to 1GB RAM. I was just wanting to get people's opinions. It's paultry change really, though.

For grandparent, probably doing hardcore surfing and email... I'd say splurge and get the Sempron! :D

Seriously, what are they going to do? Real business apps would benefit from the cache of the A64, but all in all you're not likely to see much difference either way.

Is there a clock or bus speed diferance with the Sempron 3400+ or the A64 3200+?

...I just checked The egg for stats:

Sempron 3400+ (AM2)
1.8Ghz
HT: 1600MHz
L1 Cache: 64KB+64KB
L2 Cache: 256KB
Virtualization Technology Support: No

Athlon 3200+ (AM2)
2.0Ghz
HT: 2000MHz
L1 Cache: 64KB+64KB
L2 Cache: 512KB
Virtualization Technology Support: Yes

What's the whole cost of the system? If $30 is 10% or more of the total system cost then stick with the Sempron ... otherwise you might as well get them the 3200+

I would go ahead and get the A64. It has double the Cache and a 200mhz clockspeed advantage. Should equal roughly 10% more performance or so. Well worth the $30 IMO.
