Sempron 3300+ vs. Athlon 2200+ XP

1. I have an Athlon 2200+, but my motherboard blew. I am thinking of getting a cpu/motherboard combo of sempron 3300+. Is this better than my Athlon 2200+ CPU?
if so, how much. This is what I am thinking of getting?

2. This has only 3 PCI slots. How important are 5 pci slots. I have wireless internet and I can hook my wireless card up through my USB port. I believe all I need now is Sound and Video card. Anything I can see down the line that may require more PCI cards?

The mobo you linked to has onboard sound and ethernet connect. So you don't need a sound card. Nor do you need your wireless nic if you are close enough to your router to directly run you ethernet to the pc. Looks like the only addition you would need is an agp video card.

Others here can tell you whether or not the mobo is good or not as the amd systems I have built have been with Asus mobo's.

Oh, didnt see the mb question.

I have a high opinion of Biostar motherboards but have not used that particular model. Hope that helps.

You linked to a mobo/CPU combo. I could understand if you planned on replacing the mobo and keeping your athlon. Since you are replacing both, why are you sticking with Socket A? Is cost the only factor?

Edit: Many AT'ers will tell you that tiger direct rebates are the devil. I have no experience with them, I've just noticed a lot of complaints about rebates through them.

Sempron 2800+ (socket 754) and a Biostar MB with Nvidia Geforce 6100 Chipset, ~$135
Link Note the "combo specials". Shrug, I'm sure someone here will have a better combo for you, I don't follow Semprons or socket 754 boards much.

No, that combo is an old socket A setup, not much better than what you had. There must be two very different Sempron 3300+s -- that combo uses an old NF2 board and an "AMD Sempron 3300+ 2.0GHz / 256KB Cache / 333MHz FSB / Socket A / Processor", but the TomsHardware chart is testing an NF4 socket 754, which is really an Athlon 64 and is clearly superior to the old socket A Athlon XPs (which AMD renamed Sempron for a while and artificially inflated their performance number, to compete better with old Celerons).

Don't bother getting the system you linked to! It will be a little faster than what you have, but not worth it. To get better performance, you need to get out of Socket A, and upgrade to something like Socket 754.

Here is a way better deal:

Socket 754 MB + Sempron 3100+ for $89.

The Socket 754 Sempron 3100+ will blow away a Socket A Sempron 3300+. it will also overclock pretty well, too.
