Sempron 2200+ versus Athlon XP 2100+

It's a redundant topic, I apologize but a few weeks ago, I snatched up the GQ (Fry's) cheap desktop for $99. It had the Sempron 2200+ processor with the 741GX-M mobo...a decent computer for school/work.

However some of my friends are arguing that my own baby, the Athlon XP 2100+ with the "legendary" purple K75SA? Pro mobo was faster.

I also heard the Semprons especially the 3100+ have more overclockable flexiblity simply because it's a handicapped A64? I don't know.

Any thoughts?

I got my son a sempron 2400+ as a replacement to his bad 2100+ xp and according to all the testing I did it only equals the tbred 2100+ I had even though it has 333fsb....

Personally I dont like them...Got his replacement from amd...a Tbred 2200+ with a 1.6v default...It will definitely be going in and the sempron can hit the road...

My sempron is a shite ocer cause at stock the temps are high. The hsf is very good as idle to load is only an 8-10c swing max....

I will put in the lower vcore chip with what appears to be as good as a hsf. Hopefully I can get idle temps to lowe 40's....Then I may try to take it up ~2.2ghz with a 333fsb and be happy....

Actually I wont OC for awhile as this imore then enough for his uses at this moment...NIce to know that there is a boost when needed...

Im not a fan of sempron either. They should of just kept clock speeds the same as the athlon xp's. You would have a far better price : performance and you wouldnt need to change much, cept the socket from a to 745. Or they could of used K8's for all of them, instead of just making the 3100+ the only one based on a K8.

But, cost, yeild and all things AMD thinking screwed that up I bet.

my sempron 2400+ is at 200 fsb no problem, and can probably go a little more. 2.0 ghz and 36 c idle/49 c load

They did keep the clock speeds the same, just gave the Athlon XP another name and a rating against the celeron.

Anyhow, when I put a Sempron 2200+ in a motherboard with a older BIOS that doesn't know about semprons it always calls it a Athlon XP 1800+, put that against your older 2100+, and it tells you that the sempron is slower.

And a Sempron 2800+ is basically a Athlon XP 2400+ with 333MHz FSB, instead of 266MHz FSB.

Hope that helps, so go ahead and swap the processors back out when your little bro ain't looking 🙂

AMD has publicy stated they do not rate their chips to Intel chips....XP line was rated to a tbird, so if the sempron is rated to somthing differenty it would be to the duron line.....In the past the duron have had a neutered amount of l2 cache and subsequently its performance hit was there... The semprons appear to have full cache and in my case is a 333mhz fsb while the 2400+ and lower xps were 266fsb......
