This is a pretty far out question, but what kind of performances do semi's/ large trucks get (i.e Volvo 770), from what i remember they were pretty fast and as you can probably imagine the manufacturers dont really have these figures on their websites... By performances i mean like 0-30 , 0-60, 40-70 etc... Anyone?

High torque, eventully high gear transmissions, and low gear diffs= not that fast top end. Most are computer controlled and limited.

Because of gearing and such, they're not going to be very fast accelerating.

Seeing that many semis have engines with a useable RPM range of 1000RPM or less, IIRC, that means lots of shifting...

LOL, you probably have shifted 12 times before you got to 60.

But if you've ever driven next to a tractor without a trailor.....they can get up and go when they're at highway speeds.

Umm, they can break into the triple digits for speed. Downhill, loaded, foot to the floor in the middle of the night. Yeah, they can go fast. Bobtailing around I start in 5th or 6th gear, that still leaves 5 or more gears to get up around 60mph. At least you don't need to use the clutch once your moving.

Bobtailing??

What so you have to use the clutch to move from a stop but once ur rolling no clutch? Thats interesting how does that work? Also another thing i've been wondering, how are they for comfort on long journeys, can you pretty much just sit back or are they quite demanding?

Man ever since i was younger i've been interested in big trucks, i'd love to drive one, sorry about all these questions lol

I've heard of that before. Perhaps maybe NASCAR?

Who wants to try it on their vehicle first? :p

I didn't have to use the clutch in my Suzuki Sidekick or my FJ.

Bobtailing, driving without a trailer. Yes, it is pretty much just sitting back and watching the mirrors and watching out for idiot four wheelers(cars). I always liked driving in the midwest and Canada, no people and few big towns with traffic. My truck is really nice, comparable to a motorhome, just a lot smaller. Bed, table, tv, dvd, refridgerator, microwave, and a sink.

It's even got the kitchen sink!

Some trucks are governed. These are the ones you generally see going 66.1 mph trying to pass a truck going 66.05 mph with a mile of traffic behind the passer. This occurs when the passer is an inconsiderate ass and swings out to pass without enough of a break in traffic. I hate these sorts of truck drivers.

Lol not me, i cant see how that works, can see in a sequential but that has no clutch at all, how come you need it to pull of but not to change once moving

Actually i can see how that works kind of... lol

Oh right, yea some trucks are pretty impressive i wonder what they are like round a track lol

I remember seeing once, i was driving next to a truck carrying about 20 tons of rubble, this is doing about 70... conditions were pretty bad, and we kind of went over a small crest, and i remember looking over at the truck to see how the suspension handled it, and the front wheel on my side was literally bouncing up and down REALLY quick coming a good few inches off the ground with each 'bounce', i dont know if the wet had anything to do with it but that was scary, needless to say i quickly got away from it, i wonder what caused it...

You guys must mean when a Swift truck tries to pass a Schnieder truck!!!!! Only it's more like 65.000000001 trying to pass 65.0000000000001 mph. They are asses doing that, especially when they start the pass at the base of a hill.

Are you owner/operator?

What do you drive? Any mods?

Knew a guy who had toggle switches that could shut off the odometer therefore fooling the logbooks.
Had his engine done up so that he could cruise at 90mph with a full load if he wanted to. Did sumin to his turbos.

You shift a truck or any manual without the clutch by rev matching. It is easier on a truck because of the smaller RPM range.
A typical truck engine tops out at 2100 RPM, and you work it from 1500~1900.
A car has a much wider range, faster throttle response and is a bit trickier to rev match.
I never use the clutch on a truck after I get rolling. My clutch leg would fall off, LOL! The springs on those things are humoungus.

I drove semi for 10 years only using the clutch to get started from a dead stop. I have shifted a passenger car without a clutch a few times. It will grind if you're not exactly matching things up. Some trucks have a usable rpm range for 1200-1700 as well. The Volvo 770 I drove was like this. Also a Cat Acert I believe was the same. Low revving.

Usually:

1st: 3 mph
2nd: 5 mph
3rd: 7 mph
4th: 10 mph (tractor is now exiting the intersection; trailer is still in it)
(split to high range)
5th: 14
6th (or 5th overdrive): 20
7th: 26
8th (7th OD: 36
9th: 40
10th (9th OD): 45
11th: 50
12th (11th OD): 57 to the limiter
