Semi-odd feature I'm looking for in an mp3 player. Help.

I recently bought an iPod cause it's the thing nowadays, and while it's a nice player, it's lacking something that I loved about my clunky old Nomad Zen. I've tried to explain it to people with varying degrees of success, but I found a review of the Zen Xtra that did it very well:

"The Zen Xtra's best asset is a powerful interface for building playlists on the device. As you browse through the Xtra's music library, you can add any artist, album, individual track, or playlist to a queue called Selected Music. Once you've added tunes to Selected Music, you can scroll to any track in that list and play it, move it around, or remove it from the queue."

THAT is what I'm missing in the iPod, and what I want to find in my next mp3 player. I'd rather not buy another Zen because it's still a big player, and I'd hate to get it just for that one feature. I know the iPod has the On-the-Go playlist, but it's not the same and I can't delete stuff once it's in there, and I get sick of listening to stuff sometimes.

My question to you guys: Does anyone know of another mp3 player that does this?

I believe the Rio Karma will do it for you. From the website:

Dynamic playlist generation
Powerful playlist selection and organization tools built into the player itself. ?Now playing? screen shows the songs you have selected for playback. Add, remove, and rearrange the songs on this list to your liking, then save it directly as a playlist for later use. No need to pre-select songs on your computer before you leave home, like with other players.

You can add songs on the fly to the to-go playlist on the iPod right? At least my 3rd gen 15gigger does :confused: I'm not sure if I can remove a song at a time or move it around though!

You can add songs on the iPod, but can't remove them or save the playlist for later. And since I never keep the same music tastes for long, I'd like to be able to do it on the fly and not have to upload a new, rigid playlist into the player.

Anubis: Two questions; I know the Xtra is bigger than the other players, but is it unwieldy? Do you have any experience with the original Zen, cause that thing was huge. Also, does it come with a barrying case that has a belt clip, or is it still the annoying Velcro thing like the original Zen had? Thanks. :)

well.. have you tried the smart playlist?

There are some songs I don't really want to listen to but can't delete (they complete an album), so I create a playlist that removes all songs of rating 1-star and then when the bad song comes up I rate it 1-star.. I really think the smart playlist is the killer feature of the ipod.

the only thing you CAN'T do is build a playlist with the rules of
(> 1*) && (genre = rock) && (genre = pop)
:(
