Just got my D40X and only have the 55-200mm VR lens.
Now I can get a minty fresh 18-55mm VR lens local for $140
or
Buy a new 50mm AF f/1:8 lens for $150+ tax from national camera

I do both outdoor and indoor, more indoor low light shots / macro / close up stuff.

Thanks....

In time the answer would be something like "both". However, the 18-55 would probably give you more immediate utility, and the lack of AF with the 50 f/1.8 on that body might be an issue.

the 50mm lens is a short portrait lens on that body (which is actually more useful than 50s were on 35mm cameras, frankly), and can be a bit limiting. but if your goal is to take pictures of people inside, there aren't many better lenses.

If it were me, I'd get the 18-55. Quite frankly, I see no reason to buy a 50mm prime for a DX format camera (75mm equivalent) when modern zooms are so sharp.

I would also like to add that the wider angle lenses give very much utility. the 50mm prime is ultrasharp comparatively speaking, but the 18mm allows for quite impressive all-encompassing pictures. Since you only have a fairly deep zoom I would fill in the wider side first and wait on the 50mm till next time.

18-55VR first, 35/1.8 second. I wouldn't get the 50/1.8 for the D40x.

Scratch that; 35/1.8 first, 18-55VR second.

The 35/1.8 is quickly becoming my favorite lens.

unobtrusive, light weight, faster, and very cheap in comparison to a good zoom.

Thanks for the help,I am going top check out the 18-55mm vr today,he wants $130 for it,unused,he got it with his d300 but uses a 18-200mm.

I will keep that 35/1:8 in mind for next lens.
