Well, I am heading down to my local computer shop where I had my computer assembled (warranty ftw) because of my malfunctioning X800XL. The fan basically came off the damn thing, so it overheated. I cannot do anything beyond surfing the net. If I load a game (any game) as soon as it hits the menu a hard-lock occurs. I tried upgrading and reinstalling my drivers and so on, but to no avail.

I want to try and get an upgrade from my X800XL as a alternative to replacing it. I seen a good deal on a Asus 7950GT. I have stopped following computer hardware for a while, so I'm really far behind. Would going from a X800XL to a 7950GT be a decent upgrade?

(The rest of my computer specs are in my siggy)

Thanks, thing is though I tried to find some real-world testing between the two cards, but going back as far as the X8xx series is not common =). I've been out of the loop for a long while, so I don't have an idea of what kind of an upgrade it is. I am now sort of worried about my Athlon 64 3500+ (stock). I'm not sure it will bottleneck the card (I've really, really been out of the loop.....leik really.).

7950GT will be a very nice upgrade. Shader Model 3.0 support, quite a bit faster as well. I would get an X1950XT, though. Better card for about the same price. Most of the time a lower price.

night and day difference in performance if you run decent res/settings. Get another 1gb memory and Oblivion,NWN2,COH,ect will fly. They will run great with 1gb, 2gb will just open them up.
