semaphore timeout error

I know i've seen this before, but I can't remember where or how to fix it:

I copied a DVD (I'm not getting into this discussion now!), and created an ISO
of the file on one computer, so that I could burn it on the other.

My desktop has the burner, internal, 4x. I've burned many successful discs at
2x, and one at 4x. However, I've made 4 coasters already trying to burn this
new ISO. I've got the file on my laptop, and it's approx. 5GB. the easiest way
to get it to my desktop is via external hard drive, which seems to be the
problem.

When i picked my drive up off the shelf the other day, it appeared to have a
bad partition table, so I fdisk'ed and formatted the drive, and it should be
completely clean. I can copy files /to/ the hard drive from the laptop without
problem, but when i try and copy the file from the external drive to my
desktop, I eventually get a "semaphore timeout error" message. Everything I
can find online seems to indicate that this is related to ASPI drivers and to
CDROMS/DVDROMS. However, I'm copying from a hard drive.

Any ideas? help?
