I'd try to work out a jail break before I pissed away that kind of money on temporary freedom. Some time in jail will build character.

Under NC law he doesn't have a defense.
He was the aggressor in the fight and even though the other party escalated the encounter he was still the initial aggressor and responsible for the outcome.

here's an even more slippery slope I considered when I first created this thread.

your son was arguing w/the other guy.
that guy got in your son's face so your son pushed him back to get him out of his personal space.

but didn't want to detract from the main question of selling your stuff to bail him out, so left it out.

County lockup will just prepare him for life in the pound-me-in-the-ass penitentiary. Not bailing him out would be an investment in the future, like college but without the women or the booze.

You don't want him going in to do hard time and being completely unaware of what's awaiting him.

If he had the true values of a Job Creator he wouldn't be in this mess. Let him stew.

This is just irresponsible parenting. Who doesn't start a bail fund for their kids these days? I'm up to $10K already, by the time he's 20 it should be up to $75K. Plan for your kids future.

For 25k I'd probably find a way... increase credit line, church fund raiser, etc. and tell him he has to pay it back as soon as he can. The money would then go back to the various sources that helped. Now if he was a deadbeat and I knew he'll probably just do something stupid again, I'd probably be more hesitant but I believe in giving at least 1 chance.

It's either that or knowing that some strangers are going to be raping and beating him every night.

In reality though, arn't bails usually set in the millions? Basically they don't want the average joe to be able to afford it, but if you're a 1%er you can get away with most crimes. Like that rich kid who keeps killing people in DUI accidents but keeps buying his justice. Have not heard about that guy in a while actually.

Edit: skimmed through OP and missed that it was 250k not 25k. That's a bit tougher. Would not sell my house but I'd try to start some kind of fund I guess.

bail is $250k. u get the $ back if he shows up to court. u don't have $250k unless you sell your house.
Don't have kids and it'd involve too much typing to reply to the rest of the post except to say that only a naive idiot would take the cops' or prosecutors' word for anything, especially the facts of a case involving someone the former have arrested and the latter are charging. If your answer to the hypothetical depends on the facts of the case, at the very least talk to the kid's lawyer.

But anyway, the real reason I even started to reply was just to note that typically, at least in the United States, you could use your house as security to answer the bond without actually selling it, assuming it is in fact worth $250,000 or more. Of course, you still lose it if the kid skips.

This scenario is exactly why I abandon all of my women if there is any indication my seed as taken root.

:D

Modern parenting 101?

Never would have thought of that and certainly glad I never needed it.

"Just thought I'd tell you, Junior, the way things are going we'll be able to foot the bill for 4 years at the state university AND cover bail for anything up to a second strike felony!"

put every last dime you can into your lawyer/defense. if there is any chance of winning, which would depend on the circumstances and applicable statutes, the lawyer is 100% the best bet. county will suck for a year but there is no substitute for a good lawyer and yeah at least he will have some idea what to expect if the trial doesnt go down well
