Selling on Ebay question

I sold an item on Ebay for $41. The buyer paid immediately via paypal, but his address is uncomfirmed. I'm not even sure what this means exactly.

My question is does not having a confirmed address really matter? If so, how can I make sure I don't get screwed on this deal?

You can ship to an unconfirmed address, but you take the risk of getting the money reversed if they buyer claims they never got the package.

edit: And BTW, in my auctions I not only state that I will only ship to confirmed addresses but if they wont / cant then they must send a postal money order within five days or an NPB will be filed.

Man youre taking a big risk. To qualify for the seller protection program you must ship to a confirmed address AND for amounts over $250 you have to get a signature confirmation that can be verified online by paypal. If the buyer used fraudulent funds to buy your item, its as good as gone.

What exactly does "unconfirmed address" mean? Does it mean their billing and shipping address do not match?

it means they are having it shipped to an address other than the address on the credit card

I put in my disclaimer, unconfirm address requires insurance, no exceptions.. so if they claim its lost, you claim insurance, no one is out..

Is USPS delivery confirmation good enough to prove delivery, or is an actual signature required?

I once shipped to an unconfirmed address on PayPal. Three days later they did a chargeback on my credit card. Turns out they had purchased the item with a stolen CC number, and once the CC company figured it out they took their money back. After trying to contact the buyer repeatedly, I found out that the unconfirmed address I had shipped to was actually the street address of one of the post office box stores. Sneaky bastard. He made off with a $375 video card.

In retrospect, should have either not shipped to an unconfirmed address, or paid attention to his eBay rating - it's not uncommon for people to have unconfirmed addresses (I just look for a high rating if I elect to ship to one).

No it's not. You have to go with something like FedEX, UPS, or DHL.

If the USPS has a method that records the signature online somewhere, you could probably use that, but I'd just play it safe and drop by a Kinkos and mail it via FedEX. They're not all that expensive.

Thanks for the info guys. After some quick research, this guy seems legit.
For $41 I think I'll be OK this time, but now I know to put that I only ship to verified addresses in any future Ebay listings.

Not necessarily!
When I first signed up at PayPal, they WOULD NOT list my address as confirmed, since I didn't tie the account to a Credit Card.
Eventually, I upgraded to a Premier account (Meaning PP took the X% out of each transaction), even though I still don't use a Credit Card, my address is "Confirmed", not only on the original address given, but also to each and every address I have added to my account.
(I have my Home address, Office Address, and since I work out of town a lot, I have Apartment, PO Box , and Jobsite addresses all listed, all "Confirmed".

So in reality, an unconfirmed address may or may not be the true address, but if the Paypal account is a Credit Card type transaction, an "unconfirmed" address would raise a red flag to me.

verified means nothing. the address needs to be confirmed, not verified.

Until next week the money gets reversed and your paypal account gets locked, and sent to collections.

Happened to my buddy. He's screwed, nothing he can do. His own fault for shipping to an unconfirmed address.

I for one will NEVER ship to an unconfirmed address.

If you do your research you will be fine.

The last auction I had ended (@ $265) to a new ebayer with an unconfirmed Paypal account. Her email account was to a business, so I matched that up with the address she wanted it shipped to and that matched up, plus I tried the company's website and under one page was this woman's picture plus phone number and title at the company. I felt ok about shipping it and all went well.
