Selling my laptop. Is there a way to truly delete a file or format the HD?

Selling a laptop to someone and they want me to keep the OS on so they can check to see if everything works fine...I've had important, personal files on the laptop before so I was wondering if there was a true way of deleting a file other than shift + delete? Even if I wipe the HDD clean, is there any way they could recover my files?

DBAN is great! I got it for free from a former edu affiliation. A bit slow, but protection of private data is definitly more important. Partitionmagic may also have a scheme to overwrite 0's and 1's to add protection
