Selling my car.

How do they work? Or is it still better to use the local papers?

I am in New Mexico. Rio Rancho which is right next to ABQ.

I used Autotrader to sell two cars.

It took me 8 days to sell an '85 5-speed Toyota Celica (last year of RWD) for $2000.

It took me 6 months to sell a '02 Honda Civic Coupe Auto, 20k miles in perfect shape with a 60k mile warranty for $1k under book (Sold it for $11.7k)

If you're selling a popular car that costs over $10k, it will take a while. But the cheaper, and more rare the car, the faster it will sell.

And yes, I received more phone calls from a 2 week running in my local area (Cincinnati) classified than 6 months on Autotrader. Kinda sucked.

If its a rare/popular car you might get more money..for instance, someone in Texas who happens to live close to my parents is selling his '95 240sx with decent mileage (~80k)..its worth about $4k according to edmunds.com, but is listed @ $6.5k on autotrader. When I called him he said its $6500/firm because that's its "market value" (its more like KBB dealer retail..).

I have no doubts that sooner or later he'll get his asking price, but it'll take a while till someone desperate enough stumbles upon it (and with its ugly gold exterior, they'd have to be desperate 🙂 )

*EDIT* took me too long to post this, but RED pretty much made the same point before me.. 🙁

I am selling my car currently, and just posted on a forum dedicated to F-Bodys... and so far the response is great, Ive had 6 people in 5 days show intrest, 3 showing major intrest.

I helped my mom sell her old car by using cars.com ...
She got more than she thought she would for it. She also got lots of people calling asking questions, wanting to see the car, etc.

I forget the exact amound she got , but it was a 1995 ugly green Ford escort ugly hatchback with a Cracked windshield, it had been in a bad accident several years before (car was rear ended at a red light during a rainy day). One of the tires leaked air slowly, the AC stopped working, it had like 90K miles on it ... The car made strange noises when going above 30mph, and it rattled above 60mph, the brakes were starting to squeek. All these problems were posted , and people still sthowwed interest in it.
