Selling my 2005 Honda Civic EX. Tips?

I've been following Anandtech for years but I just discovered this forum, 😱

Anyways, I need some advice. I'm going off to college and I'm selling off my car, a 2005 Honda Civic EX (4 door, automatic, silverish color) with roughly 87,000 miles on it. I bought it a little over a year ago for $7,000, and at the time it had 79,000 miles (great deal IMHO). Due to the horrendous earthquake in Japan, it seems the Kelly Blue Book price for my Civic has increased to roughly $9,000 - $9,500, going by my zip code and condition (good). Can I expect to get $9,000 and over for my car? Here are some things that are wrong with it:

  • Front seat and back seat passenger doors do not lock/unlock electronically. I was told the little motor that is in charge of that needs replacing
  • Driver seat door has the little outer plastic frame missing. I was driving and it just fell off one day.
  • Small amount of scratches on the back and front bumpers.
  • The hood has some (about 5) tiny rust dots. Last owner told me that he parked the car under a tree and acorns fell and scratched off the paint a bit.

Mechanically, it runs fine. I have never had a single problem with the car. I know nothing about cars, however, so there may be something wrong that I am not aware about. I will say that before I bought it I took it to the mechanic and he said it was in great shape.

Also, the brakes were changed by the previous owner less than 2 years ago, and I changed both back wheels a year ago as well (I drove over something sharp). The front wheels are also under 2 years old.

Do these things constitute to a good condition KBB price? Should I fix the imperfections before I sell it or should I let the new owner deal with them? Am I asking for the right amount? Should I only post it on Craigslist or should I try Cars.com (it requires a small fee).

Any advice is appreciated and accepted. If you would like more info that I forget to mention, let me know.

Sell it in CA...they go for much more there.

The few cars that I have sold have alway sold the best on Autotrader. I have not tried ebaymotors though...so I can't attest to that.

Try craigslist first.

You can post for $8500 if you have time to sell or do $7900 if you want to get rid of faster and be done with it.

I would start at the high 7's myself as KBB is bad and getting worse IMO.
Check to see what cars like your are selling for on craigslist. Try to find the middle price point and under cut it a little.

1 post wonder?

Seriously though... Try Autotrader or Craigs. Just be aware that a lot of scammers and flakey people are on Craigs. Patience.

Don't trust KBB for one thing. See what the going rate is in your area and start there. CL works fine but expect lots of lowballers. But, since its free, there's no harm in posting it for $9500 and seeing what happens.

I will be selling it in the NJ/NY area.

What are your experience of selling things in general?

I sold some stuff on eBay. I helped a friend sell his car on Craigslist. Decent experience. I am extremely suspicious of anyone, especially on Craigslist, so I guess that's a plus?

From a quick search on Craigslist, dealer posted prices for my car seem to be in the range of $8,500 - $10,000. There are very little private sellers, but from the few posted in the past month, the price is from $8,000 - $9,500.

I bought my car from Craigslist, so I do have some experience in that sector. Any scams I should look out for? Should I allow the potential buyer to take my car to the mechanic? Anything else?

Last car I put on autotrader and craigslist, had pretty good number of calls from both. Ended up selling to a guy who called from the autotrader ad though. Lot of low balls from craigslist as usual, just brushed them off.
