Selling laptop on ebay.. how do I make sure his paypal payment is legit?

khlee

Senior member
He wants to pay my paypal account with his credit card. How do i make sure his credit card is not stolen or anything??

I don't take Paypal CC for expensive stuff - money orders or certified cheques only.

But if the auction's over - get a home address & phone number, then call his CC company and verify the information.

Sure it's paranoid, but Paypal isn't the best tool for the eBay seller.

Doesn't it take 3 to 4 days for the credit card payment to clear?

If so, don't ship until the payment has cleared.

IIRC, credit card payments through Paypal clear to your account instantly.

Cleared or not, it can still be stolen.

WTF! What has become of the situation?

If you are this worried, I would call the CC provider and ask them what you need to do to ensure the user is not using a stolen card. In this whole transaction, they are the only ones who are as incented as you are to prevent CC fraud.

You are responsible (as a seller) to get proper identification and a signature to clear a transaction. If you don't have that, and the buyer claims that they never made the purchase, the CC company ere's on the side of the consumer. And many CC places charge the sellers 3%+ for the priveledge of accepting their card.

So, you live by the rules and hope you don't get scammed.

Doing business over the internet is scary because it's hard to prove that the person making the purchase is the cardholder. CC Companys need to have a PIN # associated with the card that only the buyer could know... like a debit card. Then if a card is stolen, the thief would at least have a tougher time abusing it. But, consumers are lazy and if they have to remember another # they'll complain so no company wants to implement this, at least not yet.

At some gas stations now when I put my card in it asks for my zip code before it validates me and I can make a purchase. I wonder how much just that simple step cuts down on fraud, I bet a lot!
