if i sell my current 6950 2gb, unlocked, what is a card that i can get that will hold me off until southern islands release? and exactly how far away is the southern islands release date? i play source games at 1920x1200 and i'm planning to play battlefield 3 when it comes out, so i really have no need for a 6950 as of now anyway. i will be able to sell it for $250 if i sell it now and get a temporary card or i can use this until the new radeons come out and sell this for a much lower price. which choice is better for my situation?

Tough call. Hard to say when they are going to be released, but ya now would be the time to sell.

You can usually find a 6870 for around $150 or lower after rebate which is a good filler card. So depends how much $100 means to you. If its a lot then yeah dump the 6950 now. I sold my more expensive cards 2x 5870 eyefinity eds and my 6950 a couple of months ago. Using a 5850 right now until the new stuff comes out.

I would say a used HD4850 1GB / 9800GTX+ for $50 will be fast enough for all Source games at 1920x1200 (without mods obviously).

I'd say just enjoy the card and sell it once you can buy a 7K card. You won't get as much for it obviously but so what? Enjoy what you have and don't settle for a lower-end card just cause you want to save a few bucks here or there. Just my opinion.

Why not keep the card and when Southern Islands comes along, buy another 6950 2GB for cheap and set up crossfire? That setup would compete with high end 7xxx cards anyway, for less the price. That is, unless you are opposed to dual card setups for one reason or another.

I understand your plan. Problem is that we only have estimates as to when the new cards will be released. From what I understand it will be a stepped release like last time, so the 78xx cards will come first followed by the 79xx. Which could mean December/Jan before the 79xx cards are readily available.

If you do not have a problem waiting that long, a HD 6870 is a great fairly inexpensive card for that resolution. Obviously it is not as powerful as your 6950, but it should do a pretty good job. Since you have no issues unlocking, I would gather you have no issues with overclocking, so a OC'd 6850 is not bad at that resolution as well and can be had for close to $110 after rebate if you wanted to save a little more. My XFX 6850 OC's (voltage bump to 6870 stock voltage) to 960/1160 which is about the same speed my 6870 OC's to on stock voltage and they generally perform within 5% of each other at that point.

Since that 6950 can handle Source games with everything on maximum at 1920x1200, and will likely handle BF3 pretty easily, why sell it at all? Keep it, save the money, review the benches of the 7xx0 series when they're released.

No way to guesstimate release on these cards since they can be delayed into 2012. Stick with what you have and wait till the new cards are released.

only sure thing that I see is that BF3 will be out well before the 7xxx cards.

As to selling your current to get a few extra $$, then having to buy a replacement card and wait until the high end 7xxx are out (as mentioned, proberly staggered release with high in jan/feb), you could be running the lower rated card for nearly 6 months.

Far better to just keep it, then sell it when you upgrade. At least then you get the performance that you have now until then, and do not have a useless extra card (the temp card).

Why bother. You will still probably be able to sell an unlocked 6950 for a decent price when the 7x00 series comes out. Is it really worth your time to sell it and buy a "hold over" card that you will also probably lose money on to save $50 (maybe less depending on how much of a hit you take on the "hold over" card).

I got a radeon 9700 pro with your name on it though... just found it while cleaning out my basement!

Edit: I'm pretty sure an unlocked 6950 will be able to run BF3 with some eye candy on at 1920x1200. The cheapest rout might actually be to pick up a second one after the 7x00 launch (as mentioned above).

I don't see the point in this. The 6950 is a very capable card, how about you just keep enjoying it, wait until the 7xxx series is released, look at the reviews and decide if you want to upgrade. It just seems like too much work try and save a few bucks.
