I've been with out my 580 for a day and feel like an ass for letting it go.

The games I have been playing have become unplayable at desired settings and the card I want to buy (7970) is an eternity away... Yes 2 weeks is an eternity up north in the winter when gaming is the past time activity.

I'm running my old 4870x2 + 48701 gig trifire setup.

I have lots of texture mods and stuff in Skyrim and I'm pushing well over 1 gig video mem usage, something like 1.4g. I really don't want to rip apart my texture installs just to make it playable.

Rage is a stuttery mess, I don't know if it is a vram issue or AMD/Crossfire issue but it is near unplayable.

I started playing AVP again today since it scales briliantly with zero issue using TRIfire. Pretty much locked @60 fps using 2560x1600. Don't know how long this will satisfy me since the game is only meh.

Guess Ill start plaing my recent purchases during the steam holiday sales to tide me over. I picked up singularity and pnumebra, both seem like they are going to be decent and won't kill my system.

I really feel like the hold up is the 1 gig of vram limit I have. This is what I think killed My GTX460 Sli setup in playability and looks to be haunting this trifire rig.

Anybody else find themselves in a bind like mine?

Just think, the longer you go without a high-end card, the greater chance you have of not even wanting to get a new one because of a new hobby...

...

Nah! :p

What I do is buy my new card first and then sell what I have....

Anyhow you'll just have to stick with less demanding games like Penumbra ETC...Until you get your new card.

I feel your pain man, I sold my 5850 2 months before the 6850 came out. I was left with a HD4250 IGP and could only play Source games like Left 4 Dead 2--at rock-bottom resolutions.

Several weeks in, I gave up waiting for the 6850 once I saw the price-gouging prices being charged for it. I got a GTX 460... which arrived defective! More IGP pain. Then prices dropped and I got a 6850.

My recommendation is to crack open those low-graphics-requirement games you had been putting off, like Humble Indie Bundle games or something, and game on those until you get a high-powered setup again, not that your trifire is weak, but apparently to YOU it is. At least it isn't IGP. :)

... Yes 2 weeks is an eternity up north in the winter when gaming is the past time activity.

- Ice fishing
- Skiing/snowboarding
- Snowmobiling
- Hunting
- Snow shoeing
- Hockey
- Ice skating/speed skating
- Building a snowman with the kids
- Indoor sports (tennis, soccer, track and field, badminton, volleyball, swimming, working out at the gym)
- Reading a good book (1000 novels /books everyone must read: the Definitive List)
- Sudoku
- Watching TV shows/movies
- Going to a lounge, piano bar/jazz bar, playing pool, bowling, etc.
- ***

None of these is appealing to tie you over for 2 weeks until HD7970? All you do is just game?

Have you played Braid, Limbo, Super Meatboy, Trine 1 and 2, Starcraft 1 or 2? Sega Genesis Classic Packs (Steam)? These are cool games that don't need a GTX580 to enjoy.

Russian, I know you don't have snow in Toronto because we have none here. This winter is a bust so far, just cold rain and a risk of black ice tonight.

Well, I do have an 11 month old daughter which keeps me from doing a few of the things on your list.

I was referring to my winter evenings mostly, which rules out even more. Plus, sometimes I just like to be lazy. =)

Ya, so far it's been mild. You can still do some of the activities I listed though. Indoor ice rinks are maintained all year around in Toronto, and indoor sports are accessible through sports clubs/gyms, etc. Also, Blue Mountain has snow already. Of course, with an 11 month daughter, I can see lavaheadache's dilemma.

Why did you edit out "adult-oriented activities" from your list of things to do? Are you saying that such activities already created one problem and that he doesn't need more? :p

I don't have seller's remorse, but I'm getting a horrible feeling of passover remorse.

I'm thinking I should have just bit the bullet and bought a 2500k and 6870 months ago. I could pick up a 6870 right now for $150; if the pricing of the SI cards is correct and they actually sell for what they're supposed to, I have a sinking feeling that I am going to get no more performance out of the ~$200 space with SI than I would have with Barts.

I sort of know what you mean. I sold my GTX 580 as well, and I probably should have asked for a higher price. I didn't expect it to sell as quickly as it did, considering it sold for more in Dec then the same card previously sold for in summer (non-paying ebayer that time). This 6950 is a great card for the money, but it's no GTX 580 that's for sure.

As far as other hobbies go... I am learning to play drums, which is fun (and keeps me warn when it's a little chilly in the house), but I can't play them too late. It's an electronic kit with mesh heads so it's not LOUD, but even with headphones on I can't play when my wife is asleep. Plus, I'm still learning so there is a certain level of frustration at times - sometimes I just need to step away from the kit to reset my brain.

Perhaps you could play some games that are actually fun and not all eye candy?
I am just as happy playing Plants Vs Zombies or Defense Grid when the mood strikes as anything else. While I love the latest and greatest games, I still love playing games for the enjoyment of it. I think sometime we get caught up in the hardware and forget about why we actually need all that horsepower.

That's how to do it. When I was first learning how to play the guitar I had to put it down for a day or two and then my fingers would magically listen again.
