My old Sony laptop died late in April and I got a new Dell 1420 the first week of May. I thought I was going to college for Creative Writing, so the Dell fit me perfectly. Well, I recently was admitted to a MFA in Film and Electronic Media and will be attending school in DC. I will most definitely need to get an Apple with Final Cut Pro at some point as I will be there for three years and doing all my work in one of the school's labs is impractical.

I figure I could get most of what I paid if I sold it now and bought a Macbook Pro. But I could get a better spec'd laptop sometime in the fall and will know exactly what I am going to need for school and what deals I can get. However, my laptop will drop significantly in value by that point.

What should I do?

Evaluate an alternate software package that will run on a Windows OS?

Masturbate furiously until the answer comes to you.

No matter which route you take, you win.

The only real alternative is Avid, and it won't work on my laptop (it is pretty system specific). And Final Cut is really a better application.

There you go. Apple sucks.

Not for video production.

EDIT: for Windows

Not really. That is more for home video type stuff. I mean, it is okay in a pinch. But it isn't all that great.

ok then i say sell the dell, buy the mbp, keep/sell the ipod touch, keep the dell install cd and install it on the mbp via boot camp.

i doubt there's going to be any big upgrade by the fall but i'm not very in touch with the apple mac rumors.

EDIT: you also might want to get the mbp now so that you get used to using mac osx and using final cut. it would probably not be a good idea to try to learn a new os and a new application while trying to get projects done.

I'd say go with Avid.

But whatever.

Ideally you would like faster storage than is typically in laptops.

Rumors say a new MBP is coming out at WWDC next week.
