hey all,

After downtime and the like due to hardware problems I'm back (doubt anyone missed me :D). I need something stable like SOB with a small footprint (F@H wont work).

Don't feel like doing SETI: boinc (or w/e they are calling it) all that much (not out of the question)

So yeah...Tired of crunching numbers for the sake of crunching numbers but no other DC app that I had tried just worked as easily on my systems and as out of the way as SB.

Any Ideas?

Hardware you ask? 2.8 (maybe 3.0/3.2 if it o/c's) P4C and a 3.22 P4C.

Thanks guys...

I'll sell you F@H for a dollar ;)

doh, you said no already to f@h, if you turn the advanced settings off it does have a very small footprint though.

I did f@h for a few months but on one system it refused to play right as a service. And I've lost half my ram on my other system so I can't run the bigWU's as I only have 512MB on both =/

trust me. i would love to do f@h :D

How is DPAD doing? I loved that project and how close stephen was with the community. Did he ever manage to get it out of Beta? I see your still hosting my [outdated] dpad guide wolfsraider ;)

I am looking at Fad but I had problems with FAD on my old Athy.

For the moment I was just going to get Boinc so it is crunching something. Have to break in the new family pc anyways :D.

But I'm a bit befuddled about the "first time user settings" on the website.

What are the settings I should use so that it doesn't constantly ping out to the internet and that it has a 1 day cache of work generally? Also why is default hard disk size set to 100 GB. What size should I set it to?

All I could find was a general boinc install guide. I would like it to run as a service but I wouldn't mind seeing it interact with the desktop (if that is even an option)

Thanks all!

What sort of problems? Hasn't given me any problems from Durons to A64s.

Try explaining that to the cancer cells! ;)

Einstein@Home is a project to sift through data looking for spinning neutron stars, aka pulsars. It's a project I've come to enjoy doing since I'm interested in space science. May be worth at least a casual look for you. :)

Boinc is telling me that It cannot obtain the SID information for my client :(

for FAD:

How can I set it to queue up ~ a days worth of work? Why does it show both CPU's listed but only is running on one? Am i missing something here :s

Thanks guys!

I can't deny that I haven't lurked ;)

But with overheating, losing hardware, and life DC took second or third place in priority :(

FAD has performed a critical exception error

For Boinc I found a few guides but I was hoping for those old guides of yore which were entitled " this is the bare essentials you need to run this @ the greatest speed "

Time for rest but thank you one and all!

For Fad
It should setup to used both cpus. One work unit for each cpu if it didn't you can go into the setup page by right clickng the think icon and then clicking on setup. There is a option there for the number of cpus
If you set it up to connect when online it will upload and download without you doing anything. in fact if it has no new work when it finishes the work it has and cannot connect to the web to get more it will make its own work until it can connect to the web.
If you want to store work units just right click the think icon and click on quenue in the menu that pops up the at the top of the q box click recieve and tell it how many work units to download.
If you want to upgrade to the latest version make sure betas is check in the projects box and click on the recieve box at the top of the q box and it will download the latest version of the software.
Sorry but not sure about the error message as I have never recieved it before.

I have a link to a basic setup guide in my sig.

For BOINC-preferences, the default should work in most instances, but check:
"Do work while in use?" should normally be Yes.
"Leave application in memory while preempted?" Yes...
"On multiprocessor, use at most N processors". For dual or HT, use 2, but of course if you've got a dual Xeon-HT set 4. ;)
"Connect to network about every N days". Your cache-setting, for 1-day-cache use 1.

Disk-preferences and so on can normally be left at default, rest assured it will not use 100 GB even this is the default.

It's recommended to run atleast 2 projects, in case one of them are down you'll still continue to crunch.

You can install the BOINC client as service, and still monitor/control by using the BOINC Manager. But, if you wants to display screensaver, you'll must change service-settings to "localsystem" and "interact with desktop".

For an install-walktrhough, look at http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki

More info should be accessible through the same link. ;)

Hey all...

The end result of everything is...:Drumroll please:

F@h!

Turns out that somewhere between the last time I ran it and the most recent one the client became much more user friendly in regards to running as a service (no more running Firedaemon!) and if you turn off the BigWu's it's only using about 12MB of ram per each client. Not bad overall.

FaD kept giving me an illegal exception error and Boinc refused to install due to its inability to find my SID????

Much thanks to Wolfraider's excellent guide for F@H. Let's see if I can make a small dent on the team. 2 instances on the main rig and 1 on the other :)

thanks one and all. I will say; its good to be back!

Don't know of any install-problems with latest BOINC-clients, so more info please...
Like what BOINC-version did you try installing, what OS and service-pack... it's possible the installer demands atleast NT4-sp6a or win2k-sp4 or XP-sp1, install-choise normal/shared/service if came so long, and there during installation did it refuse to continue, and what is the exact error-message?

Rattledagger, is the SID what one gets from the project and needs to be entered when attaching to that project?

Overkiller, it is great to have you back :)

If it's during attaching to a BOINC-project the error-message is very descriptive, saying "Invalid or missing account key. Visit this project's web site to get an account key", so shouldn't be a problem...

Only reference to SID have managed to find have to do with user-groups, so maybe is trying to install BOINC as non-administrator, or service-install and choosen as user-name a non-administrator...

hey rattle et al,

I was trying to install the service of boinc. there is only 1 user, myself, and I am the administrator...Could it perhaps have been prevented due to Zonealarm??

Gleem...82nd???? Hrm...let's see what we can do about that. At one time I had the equivalent of 8 3200 bartons running around here somehwere no various projects. Lets see how much of the good 'ol friends I can call back into action :)

Since aren't using Zonealarm, don't know if this can give problem during installation...

... but depending on firewall, you must probably give both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe connection-rights.

boinc.exe access internet on "standard" port 80, or according to proxy-settings, and interacts with boincmgr.exe through port 1043 or 31416.

Hmm, atleast a quick test with v4.72 did give informative error-message if tried to install as non-admin, unknown username, wrong password, or non-admin as service...

Win9x can AFAIK only be installed as single-user, so if installer haven't disabled other install-choises this will probably give an error-message, not meeting service-pack-requirements can possible also give error-message, and one of the NT4-server-types atleast earlier wasn't supported...
