Sell caviar black and get 3tb?

I edit videos and such, there are some external hdd that DO keep there warranty and are 7200rpm

What I'm wondering is it i can get one with warranty would replacing a 3tb one with my 1tb caviar black be a good idea?
with coupons and such its only $20 more if i sell my caviar for $75

in the 3tb range I would think all externals are 5400rpm drives (ie: not 7200rpm).

as to keeping the warrenty when you remove the drive, I suspect not, but that is up to your research.

As to performance, no, it would not be worth it as reading/writing back to the same drive needs good seek time, a black I would expect to be far better than a low powered green drive.

ive read that they are 7200rpm though and thats what I was wondering if the 7200 would be much slower than a 7200 black

Does the Caviar Black still have a 5 yr warranty as mine does. That would be something to keep in mind too. I would think that the drives you have in mind only have a 2 yr or perhaps 3yr warranty at best. And even some new drives only have a 1 yr warranty now days.

1tb caviar black? The WD1001FALS? This is perhaps the most reliable large capacity consumer drive on the market along with the Samsung 2tb F4.. I'd really think twice about letting drives like this go.. they just don't make em like that anymore it seems, and there's a reason newegg wants $170 for it now. But if you do decide to sell it on ebay, I see used ones sell for as high as $80-90 when they have warranties remaining! Before the flood and price fixing fiasco, these were only $65 brand new.

The higher the capacity, the more "green" the drive, and the lower the warranty offered is a perfect indication for how long the drive will last. Seems its becoming acceptable for these drives to only last between 1-2 years, and this is reflected in how little confidence they have in the warranty being offered.
