Is it safe (in terms of weather, security, etc) to store electronics in a self storage unit? I have a computer, a cd player, a receiver, and speakers that I will need to store. Would I need those huge tupperware cartons or something?

I'm not sure because it gets pretty cold in a standard self storage unit.

I would use a rubbermade/tupperware, you never know what might skitter over from the stuff next door

I stored some electronics in self storage for a month and a half one summer. Be sure to keep anything valuable off the floor in case of a leak or anything like that. Also, I would cover all your stuff with plastic drop cloths used for painting. These will help keep dust off your stuff, and will provide some protection against water. I wouldn't store anything too valuable in one of these units (for instance I wouldn't put my main PC in one). You might consider putting some of your smaller stuff into plastic storage tubs (such as a VCR, DVD, CD player, component stereo system) if you are really worried.

Just put your equipment in a big bin and fill it with Silica Gel that comes in with new crap.

last summer I stored two computers and some electronics(tv,vcr etc)for 2mos
they didn't have climate control. When I took the out I had to replace both motherboards
tv vcr dvd were fine.

Would you contribute it to the lack of climate control? I'll be storing these in San Luis Obispo, CA. From what I can tell, it's between 60 and 80 (for highs. . .it might get cold @ night I guess) and pretty dry all year around. Should I look for climate control?

A suggestion. Check your homeowners/rental insurance. If you do not have it, get a rider that will cover your stored goods. I was wiped out(theft) and lost, or would have lost thousands if not for that.

Yes I would recommend climate control at least for sensitive electronics such as computers.
I'm assuming the constant temperture change caused condensation build up on my motherboard.
BTW summertime tempertures in Boston ranges 80-100/day and may drop to 74 or less @ night.
