Self-Healing

Do you believe in self-healing? If so, have you ever witnessed or performed a self-healing act? Or is it just new-age mysticism to you?

(By self-healing, I mean accelerating your body's natural healing process without the use of medicines, herbs, or other external sources -- typically by meditation. This does not mean you are able to heal things your body is otherwise unable to heal, i.e. blindness).

Yes and No. Depends on the wound and ability to meditate. For most people absolutely not, although I do know that a positive attitude can boost the immune system. Some master mediators (is the an appropriate description?) can speed heart rate, increase body temperature, and increase blood flow to certain body parts - in that way I suppose yes. No one is getting rid of cancer with meditation though.

I know this is basically a technical forum. I know most here do not believe in things like this, but I am not technically "advanced" at all.
I am artsy and emotional. I do not usually think logically. There I said it.

I do believe that this is possible and does happen very often. The human mind is an amazing, powerful machine capable of unfathomable thoughts and actions, which we as a civilazation do not fully understand yet.

When my mom was going through cancer, I went with her to every doctors appointment, support group, etc. With that came stories from suvivors who seemed to have harnessed the power of self-healing beyond anything I could have ever imagined. It sounds crazy, and I would not have believed it unless I had seen it and talked with others.

As a game within my own mind, when I am feeling a cold coming on, I only think positive thoughts of health and well being. When I have a headache, I think and feel and know that i feel fine. It works.

PS, no I am not crazy. :wine: :D

I've casted heal on myself before. Usually I'm limited to once or twice per day though, as my class and level dictates.

Having worked in an ER...I'd have to say honestly no. I've seen people live that definitely shouldn't have but I guess at this stage I would credit modern medicine more than self-healing. However some people have a will to live. They shouldn't be alive before they get to the hospital but they are. Call that what you may.

no wonder I have so many problems. I'm a pessimist. :p
I need to start being more positive. I let negative thoughts consume me when I don't feel well.

There's definitely good evidence that ones state of mind can seriously affect other aspects of how the body operates. Just see how years of stress can lead to heart problems and other ailments. So given 2 people one stressed out and panicky and one happy and optimistic the latter is more likely to have a healthier immune system and hence more able to fight off disease. However is it possible to go beyond this and actively boost ones healing abilities through mental will power/exercises? Personally I doubt it.

As a rule I dont believe in the mysticizm and other crap, but I have personally been told by every single person that gets to know me that my ability to survive is well beyond anyone else they have ever seen. No, I am not bragging, I would honestly rather not have survived what I have, but there is just something that keeps pushing me to keep going that I can never put my finger on no matter how bad it gets. Yes, there is something there in some people that allows them to survive what they should not be able to, both mentally and physically.

This is coming from a strong atheist who has a very keen mind for science.

Self-healing I would say cannot involve the use of things like medicines or herbs or whatever.

First off, there's no poll.

To the question though I say yes but only in a VERY limited basis. Discovery channel a year or so ago had a show on self healing. People with clogged arteries used meditation to visualize them cleaning their arteries. Over the course of a year or more there was documented, scientific medical evidence that they had cleared their arteries by measurable amounts. When the doctors conducting the study were interviewed they said it was miraculous, but not enough to save their lives alone. After the study they were put on medicine and then were considered 100% healthy.

There was another show where people that were bedridden from low blood pressure were taught to meditate to raise their blood pressure. Again, after a year or so of meditation every single one of them learned to raise their blood pressure enough to be self sufficient at home. They could cook, clean, get groceries and everything. Unfortunately they were only up a couple of hours at a time and spent half their day in bed. They also used walkers, etc. The conclusion was it was an amazing amount of progress but it wasn't like they were "cured". For the people, however, they might as well have been they were so happy.

To conclude, I believe that people can self heal certain things to an extent. I do not believe that people self-heal themselves through stage 3 cancer or anything like that. There are miracles, and then there is self-healing.

Some advanced Buddhist monks can consciously slow their heart rate while meditating. Who's to say that that same talent can't be used (subconsciously in the average person) to say, stimulate heightened immune response? It may not be as significant (if at all) in the average person, but I'm inclined to believe it exists in some form.

I believe perhaps something psychologically related, like if you are stressed take deep breaths, but not serious physical illness.

Couple weeks back this one tooth started aching bad(not the worst I've ever had, but pretty bad). A few times while grimacing I screamed in my mind, "Just F'g fall out of my head!!". Ibuprofen saved me after a couple days, but last night I closed my jaw and hit somethinng. I knew it was the tooth, but I expected there to be pain and there wasn't. A quick probe with my tongue revealed a very loose tooth. After twenty minutes playing wih it with my tongue it just fell out.

Self-Healing? I doubt it, but it saves my Anti-Dentite Ass from making an appointment, so I'm quite pleased. :D

some people may be able to naturally increase their chi or chakra (vital energy) without herbs, acupuncture or tai chi

I don't believe in self healing. I believe in God but not self healing. Whenever I hear about people witnessing someone heal themselves right there in front of them, I normally respond back and tell them to check themselves into a psychiatric ward as they may be experiencing psychosis or schitzophrenic symptoms.

All healing is self healing. It's the body that does the work. Medicine just helps the body heal better.

And, I still don't see a poll.
