Self hair-cutting

I don't have alot of hair and I got tired of paying $13 for someone to run clippers over my head for 2mins, so I went out and bought one.

Before I dive in, any suggestions? This clipper only has 5 setting guides, and I have to use the shortest one. I don't have a hand mirror to look at the back of my head- should I wait?

How likely is it that I screw up and end up having to shave my entire head?

Hah. Pics, yeah, I know I'm bald, I don't need you jokers reminding me.😛

Actually, I have a decent amount of hair, just not in the right place. Typical male pattern baldness.

I don't think the 2nd guide will even touch my hair, so I have to go for the shortest setting- 1/8".

You need some sort of mirror or someone to help you out. My friend tried doing that last weekend and was okay until he got to the back. He ended up shaving it all off.

Dont you have someone who could help you with it?
Not only will you have a closer shot at better results, but you will have someone to beat on if they fvck it up!
😉

edit: $13.00 is nothing.
Min we spend on a haircut is $35.00

that's the thing. guys are smart enough not to pay 35 for a haircut

I actually cut my own hair once. Shaved it, but not completely bald. Just left the stuble, ya know? Anyway, it turned out OK. Left a few 2" long straglers in the back behind my ears that I had to deal with later. I would definately recommend a 2nd mirror tho, if only for your own piece of mind...

I cut my hair last week, it looks very good. The back of the head is the hardest but with a mirror it's easy. Use a difference of 2 on the clippers for the top of the head and the sides/back. I used a 6 on top and a 4 for the side/back.

I bought a pair of electric clippers that came in a box with all kinds of attachments, scissors, brushes, combs, etc. Regularly $70, on sale for $30 on a clearance sale at the local Sears. Best haircuts I've ever had and best money I've ever spent for them. 🙂

Depends on your hair and the style you want. A baldie is pretty easy to give yourself, but if you're a metrosexual with the corresponding hairdo you might want to go ahead and invest that $35 (you can sell your nards to help defray the cost though, metros don't need them anyway). If in doubt, see if you can get a likeminded, budget-oriented friend to partner with you, split the cost of the clipper and cut each others' hair. I've done it & it comes out a lot better than doing it myself.

I find it's easier to do most of it and have my brother or someone trim up my neck line and behind my ears.

It's pretty rough trying to hold a mirror in one hand and cutting with the other.

I've done it before. You can set it to whatever height and just do your whole damn head. It's a good clean look. I have mrsskoorb now cut my hair with clippers and if she was unwilling, then i'd just shorten it a bit and use clippers myself. Paying for haircuts is silly!

I've been cutting my own hair for many years. All it takes is practice. I started with electric clippers my mom gave me for Christmas one year, to trim my beard. Well, the first time out you'll usually end up pretty bald, but hang in there. I recommend getting rid of the clippers and just using sissors. After going thru the learning curve, which involves cutting the top of your ear off, snipping the knuckle skin now and then, and a couple of other blood producing episodes you'll get the hang of it.
A couple of pointers: Start off just getting the split ends. Drag your hair up with a comb or just your fingers and even it up. Experiment a little. What looks good when your cutting it doesn't always look so good in daily life. Cut only when your hair is a little dirty. If you cut it after a shampoo it always come out too short. Good rule: if it sticks up, cut it off, unless you like the Alfalfa look. Once you get it the way you want, don't think hair cut, just get into trimming 2 or 3 times a week.
It might be a good idea to get a cheap haircut and practice trying to make it look good. Always have a backup barber. Don't do drugs before you cut, until you've had some experience. Screw the back, grow a pony tail. 🙂

Guys usualy don't have hair that needs anything more than a $13 hair cut. Those of us with long hair can appreciate someone who actually knows what they are doing with scissors. People with curly hair like myself can appreciate the skill even more so. The guy who cuts my hair charges $25 then I give him a $5 tip.
