I'm running Windows 2000 and the other day I started getting an error message right at startup. The message occures right after Windows loads the desktop. The message states, "Self-Extractor corrupt - probably do to bad hard disk or file."
Here's what I've done so far...
First, I thought it was associated with Winzip so I uninstalled and reintalled the app...no luck
Second, I dumped my start up folder just to make sure nothing was loading at startup...no luck
Third, I did a little research and found this error is usually associated with a virus. Specifically, the Chernobyl and I-Worm.Gift viruses. However, Chernobyl is an old virus (1998) and cannot run in an NT/2000 platform, and there is nothing in the WINNT/System directory or the registry [HKey_Local Machine].
Fourth, just to make sure I updated my virus definitions and did a virus scan...no viruses found.
Fifth, ran a scandisk...no luck.
The only head-way I've made is when you log in as a different user you don't get the message. So it only happens with one specific user account.
Any advice on how to get rid of this message? Thanx!
