So who here is self-employed (welfare doesnt count :p) and would consider themselves successful? If so, what is it you do, exactly? I'm interested because it's a path I aim to follow.

Hire my mind/body out. - embedded engineering work

Success can be measured in multiple ways:
Pays for house in mountains, family, visiting, spoiling grandchildren.
Allows the wife to spend $3-400 on herself each week.

Does not allow for taking vacations

2 Jeeps are paid for
'10 Challenger sits in garage with 20+ miles on it - paid for

I write software. Somewhere in between self-employed and business owner. I'm thoroughly middle class, but working on moving my way up.

My girlfriend and I are self employed as graphic designers. She does print design and I do motion design. We probably only make around 45k combined which is fine for us for the amount that we work. We only spend about 1200/mo on living expenses.

We live a pretty unconventional lifestyle though. The majority of of money goes into a travel account that we save up over a few months. Once it gets big enough we'll go on 2 to 4 week vacation. Like last September we were in Spain for 4 weeks and this January we traveled the east coast. We take about 4 of those per a year.

Could we make more employed full-time somewhere? Sure we could, but I wouldn't trade our free spirited lifestyle for anything. The taxes are a little more involved too, part of it because the amount of deductions you have to go through.

Of course it depends on your field and location. If you are anything programming, web development, or interface related you could make it pretty easily self employed.

self employed physician. i do ok but get killed in taxes

Just OK there Mr. 1%er? - Even if you're not self employed you get killed on taxes.

The best part of being SE is being able to contribute to a SEP IRA compared to a 401K. SEP IRA limit is at 25% of income up to $49,500 or 401K at $17,500.

Well, you forgot the industry. Mine isn't particularly safe. Pistols for the cash drawer, the pocket, the ankle, the desk, the other ankle, the shoulder holster, the belly band, the other pants for the new carry, the new carry....plus ammo and range time. Damn sucks.

I wonder about this - getting gigs with the multitude of freelancers out there on sites like elance can't make it all that easy. And it also results in competitive (lower) payouts. Yes you can work in your underwear, but just doesn't seem worth the time & effort.
