Self Destrust Hard Drive

My friends were talking about these things you can get for your hard disks that you must have a key in the right slot when you turn it on, or else the hard drive will self format. This is to use when your house is raided for whatever reason i guess, so when they boot up your comp for info, u make sure u grab the key beofre they do, so they cant get anything. A company also made these things out of thermite that melts the hd completely when not turned on the correct way.

Nice!

I don't think I really have anything that sensitive on my drives though, LOL.

Nice. Actually, I've thought about this myself from time to time. A more likely method is using a powerful electromagnet. If you turn your machine on without flipping the handy dandy switch, the powerful electromagent comes on and makes your hard drive into a solid-state coaster.

thats true, I seriously bet people have systems set up, waiting for the G men to raid their house, just so theyc an use it

nah, IM not the one who needs it,..... Im talking mroe about those people who have gigs upon gigs of illegal material.... MP3's... Pirated ARRGH Software etc.

That sounds like an expensive solution. When your 2 year old cousin comes over and turns your computer on (b/c we always leave our computer off right?) it will format or explode or whatever...

Anything you do you want to physically damage the disk as well. The problem is containment. In the average building, using enough thermite to melt through a HD in 1-2 seconds is probably going to burn down the building as well, which would probably get you in at elast as much trouble.
