I love em...always use them if they are available. Although now, they are becoming increasingly popular and more people are starting to use them....unfortunately, now I get stuck behind people who are inable to follow simple instructions, and screw up the machines. Actually, its sort of amusing everytime I hear "please wait for cashier assistance" and the people get upset at the machine.

Yep. Too bad the complete idiots find a way of getting in line before me. It takes me a about 1/1000th of the time it takes most of the dumbasses who can't figure out how to use them.

I'll use them when they're open, but half the time, it seems like they're either broken or being used by people who don't quite follow how to use them.

I'm always at home depot and use them there. I love the machines too so I don't have to make small talk while someone sits there touching all my food and items. Good stuff... the only bad thing is the jobs that they take away from people.

I wouldn't use one at a grocery store, but I use them at Home Depot, mostly because they usually only have one regular lane open.

well, as with the real world, there are those who can master a machine without much effort, and there are those who shouldn't be near these god d**m machines. <cough>female drivers <cough>

and lightweight items rock...throw a nut driver for a drill in...*bounce* "please put the item back in the bag"....DIE MACHINE!

although I watched an old lady just pack everything up one day and go to a human checker, leaving her husband to convince the machine that he wasnt buying anything

I try to use the one at Home Depot and Walmart whenever possible. But as the OP said, they are being used more and more by peopel that really shouldn't be touching anything computerized! Scan and pay people!

Hate them...they never scan right...always telling you to bag stuff...people using them don't know how to use them.

Considering I've seen them in the midwest and in Washington, no. Maybe the National Grocery Baggers Association is especially strong in Cali? ;)

They have them in the SF Bay Area at Home Depot, Lowe's, and quite a few Albertson's. I use them if I don't have a lot to buy, usually at HD. I don't use them when I shop at a grocery store and get a ton of items because, well, I'd rather not bag my own. They can be a pain though. I tried to buy a plant at HD (among other things), and the damn thing had no UPC. I could not find it in the search, the damn clerk couldn't find it in the search, and it took forever to get it resolved. Finally they just called a manager over who used the overide and charged us the same as a similar plant.

More often than not.
Of late, I have also started paying with cash :)

Edit: my sister showed me how to use the keypad. Yes, I know.. she lives in DC metro area, whereas I lived first in rural IL (CHampaign-Urbana ) and now CT. ;)
